  1. I have been pretty quiet in here lately while getting into a new job but been doing some turning to keep my sanity in between. Had some fun recently turning square/rectangular bowls. Not the easiest to get into all of the angles and those feet swinging at 1k rpm are sometimes tricky to stay away from!
  2. Awesome clamps, that was me looking for them a while back. The Pony ones are very highly rated. Did toolcraft do the cutting and threading of the pipes for you?
  3. Nitecore i4, charges 4x 18650/20700's at a time and does a brilliant job of it.
  4. https://www.strandhardware.co.za/service-and-repairs Im pretty sure they can help, Triton make good quality stuff normally.
  5. Weirdly I have an electric planer and belt sander that are the old Ryobi industrial units, never seen any of those for sale these days but they will not die no matter what I do to them. I would rate those at similar quality to the older Makita stuff(comparing to tools my grandfather had)
  6. I would say no, their cordless tools have the worst batteries you can imagine. My farther in law has had a few of their li-ion 18V tools and both batteries supplied never lasted more than a year. My Bosch green cordless drill is going on 3 years now and still as good as the day I bought it. Corded tools I dont mind Ryobi, but will never touch their cordless stuff.
  7. If you are going to make one then I suggest watching this video, brilliant instructions and looks like it wouldnt be super difficult if you have the tools required.
  8. I built my workbench out of the support beams from the bottom of the big pallets, that thing is like a rock and will be around for a long time! Its a bit of a pain to go to the local warehouse that breaks them down and sells the bits off but the wood is cheap and its miles ahead of the local pine we get. Interesting thing with it though is the massive pockets of pine sap, I was doing some SGB this morning and one piece just burst into flames because it had opened a sap pocket that was still liquid.
  9. The oldest wooden temple in Japan is finished almost exclusively using that method so it seems to be a fairly decent preservative! https://www.japan-guide.com/e/e4104.html Cap is right about SA pine, its got massive growth rings which leaves very large areas in between. Its nice for adding colours to the SGB but on its own its a little bland. The pine Im using is European pine, which comes from pallets that Mercedes Benz ships car parts from German on. The difference in growth rings is massive. If i compare a SA pine log its generally at max 12-15 years old, the same thing in the European pine is easily 30 years+ and has very tight rings. Its down to the difference in temperatures where the trees grow.
  10. I tried the very light burning with a soft wire brush and it was a very mild effect, the annual rings go black but the softer wood between goes back to a dark brown colour. For the shelf Im making Im doing the deep burn to have the more pronounced ridges and two tone wood between.
  11. Been quiet on the showing side of the stuff I have been doing but had quite a fun project turning a mortar and pestle for my sister. The mortar is made of ash and the pestle is bluegum. I think they came out ok for a first attempt. I used OB shine juice(1/3 BLO, 1/3 shellac, 1/3 meths) as an external finish for durability but its not food safe so a mineral oil/beeswax finish was used for the pestle and interior of the mortar. Recently changed out washing machine from a frontloader to a toploader so the storage on top for detergents etc is gone. Making a quick shelf for it at the moment and going to shou sugi ban as a finish, should be fun.
  12. Im busy doing a quick shelf using shou sugi ban(burning) I tested on a small piece and liked the results so once this rain stops will burn the bigger pieces and see how it works out. It comes out an awesome colour with very pronounced ridges from the annual rings.
  13. They are seldom moody when you are paying them, Im sure it would be a different story if you were looking for money from them!
  14. Rally cars are absolute savages
  15. Wow that is seriously nice, the dovetailed ends look just like Matt Eslea's one.
  16. That would be the reason I would buy one. Just to get back up faster so I can do more down.
  17. So this is happening soon, cant wait! http://alexandria.run/ Some of the most awesome scenery you run in and nice and close to where I live.
  18. I know where that pic was taken... nice bike, was it the one I noticed on the cyclehq facebook page recently?
  19. You are doing great bro, Im sure its great to have some excitement back in your life. Just dont go rushing into things and take it as it comes. Very happy for you in the way things have turned around.
  20. Oh dont be like that, we know there is always a double entendre where you are concerned
  21. Urgh shame bro that is pretty terrible stuff. Take it easy and heal up.
  22. Im not so sure about them. On the one hand they have a telkom landline number and a valid street address in the domain registration details. On the other hand the domain was registered less than a month ago and its not easy to become an Apple reseller. So my immediate gut feel is no, rather stay away.
  23. I played every single one since bf2 and I swore a while ago never to buy another EA title. Im done with them and their buggy games.
  24. Hmm I have 115 and have 12 years+ working experience in the long term skills shortage list. It says minimum of 100 points, so I wonder if its been lowered or if its just related to the long term shortage list?
