  1. Usually best to start with your own house/school/bus or train.....
  2. Taking a breather on the way to the abandoned village of Muro de Bellos..... (no idea why the picture is posting sideways!)
  3. Yeah, all deceased. :-(
  4. A friend of mine just messaged me to say there was a mid-air collision last night - a flight from Lanseria and a flight from CFA Rand . . . .
  5. Saturdays road ride - stunning backdrops and scenery, as always..... This is in front of the church in Campo after a refreshing cold beer . . . :-)
  6. Did another road ride with "Jose the Priest" and "Fermin the Sculptor" on Saturday afternoon. Boltaña to Campo and back. 70km, with over 1000m of climbing. Worked the legs, caught some sun and Fermin, who sings Opera, sang to us a little on the climbs! A great day out.
  7. Originally I used to ride the Cradle MTB trail starting from the Rhino & Lion park, then as it grew I rode from Something Country. Always loved it.
  8. ha! Not sure why it would follow me.... I assume it could smell my fear! It followed me for as long as it took me to get my wits back and leg it! Please don't talk about snakes and my bedroom in the same sentence..... #nightmare! I think it might know what car I drive - it could hitch a lift underneath and I'd never know. Sweet Mary I may have already bought it home with me!!!
  9. Uncovered this little guy yesterday while raking leaves. He was sleepy and slow, but he started to follow me .....
  10. My boys started off with Thomas the Tank Engine . . . but eventually grew up enough for this!

  12. Did a road ride with "Jose the Priest" and "Fermin the Sculptor" on Saturday afternoon. Beautiful day for it and the views are always worth the climb! Fermin is 76 years old and climbed the first 7km - which rises 500 odd meters - without any problems. If I can ride like that at 76 I'll be a happy man! From FB: A "Colombiano", an "Ingles" and an "Español" riding together on a beautiful Saturday afternoon. At one point Fermin (he's a Sculptor who also sings Opera) and I were singing "El Mondo"..........
  13. Took me a while to find out how to put on the handbrake of the bosses Merc a while ago. Turns out you don't use your hand to do it!
  14. With the Alto-Pyrenees to the North and the Lakes to the south, there are enough big landmarks around here that although you might take a little wrong turn occasionally, no one should ever really get lost....... Zona Zero have taken care of the sign posting and done a great job..... Happy trails . . . . . :-)
  15. I've been meaning to write a little update on how things have generally been going here lately and finally I have 5 minutes . . . . This time last year we were halfway through a strict six week lockdown. We didn't know it was going to be six weeks when it started - like so many people, we were told "15 days"! After those first 6 weeks, the owner of one of the local campsites that I often work at got me a letter saying that I was "essential to the pre-season preparation work necessary to open the campsite" and I was able to go to work. That was possible partly thanks to the fact that I had worked there "officially" under contract the two previous summers and partly due to the age of the owner - he is past retirement age and so (in theory anyway) can't do the work himself. Apart from the initial 6 "weeks off" (which kicked in a couple of weeks after we "started work" for the year!) I ended up with consistent work at the campsite from the beginning of May right through to the end of October and then, thanks the the owner having an accident and smashing his left shoulder, had part time work there during November and December. It takes a while to make up 6 weeks of "zero income", but by the end of the year we'd done ok. Guiding work was way down compared to normal, but campsite work was up. Compared to a lot of people we'd done very well indeed and we're grateful for that. This year I'm happy to say that we've had the best "first quarter" since I started working here. Bearing in mind that our intention was never to have to find jobs here - we knew that would be virtually impossible because we moved to an area where there is very little non-tourist based work locally and we're not fully fluent in Spanish - but rather that we'd be running our own B&B and taking care of ourselves, that's quite an achievement and one that I'm proud of. I've had Winter maintenance work at the campsite (thanks to the owner having to go in for another operation just after Christmas) and several local British ex-pat's had me working for them in their houses during Jan & Feb. I seem to have built up a good reputation for turning up on time, working hard and doing a good job :-) In my next post I'll talk about what it's like working in Spain, compared to other places I've worked . . . Onwards and upwards!
  16. Just looking at the main Boeing factory in Everett and the adjacent Paine Field on Google Earth and according to the 2021 imagery only 1 of the 35 build/parking slots has a plane in it. Meanwhile down at the Boeing Field airport they have upwards of 70 what look like 737's squeezed together on the tarmac.....
  17. No picture of a snake today, but here's a picture of a hole where two walls meet at the campsite where I was clearing winter leaves the other day . . . put my gloved hand in to rake out loose leaves and then caught sight of a coiled snake uncoiling itself in there. It was surreal to see and it took me a second to work out what I was looking at. I could see two bits of snake going one way and another bit going the other way.... I still see that when I close my eyes at night!!! LOL I have no idea how long it was, but the middle bit I saw was almost 2cm thick . . . .

    Who remembers?

Always sad to see places you have fond memories of go downhill. I grew up on an Eskom town which was really well maintained back in the day. Today the facilities are all either completely gone or in such a bad state of repair that they're unusable.
  20. No "comb tucked into the top of the sock". . . . the Yanks clearly had a bit to learn from the South African men of the 70's regarding 24/7 hair maintenance . . . :-)
  21. I'm just getting around to listening to Mike Oldfields "Man on the Rocks" from 2014. "Sailing", which is the first track on the album. is a nice catchy song. Mike Oldfield - Sailing - YouTube
