I l ride the tour de Worcester every year, but if I crash there, I have enough time to recover before the Argus. The 99er is just to close to the Argus.
I am with tankman here. I do not like riding on the gravel with my roadbike., so I did not enter this year. Everybody who entered knew there was a gravel road and they decided to ride it. If you have the skill, good for you. If you dont, practise for next year or stay at home like me.
I am 1.78. When I bought my 29er I tested different bikes. The Giant, Gt and Merida medium bikes felt good, but the Silverback and Scott bikes was to small in medium. I bought a Silverback large and had to fit a 120mm stem. Try to get on different sizes of the bike you want to buy, because there is no standard in bike sizes.
I want to do 2 laps this year. Will try to get in under 3 hours the first loop and then do a second lap with my dad. It would be his first Argus and he did no other races, so he would start way back. He is 63 and his pace would not be very fast. to me it would be a scenic lap. I never stopped at any water points since the first Argus I rode, so this would be my chance to experience the Argus vibe.

Ride both and decide on the feel of the bike. I had to choose between a 2013 silverback Vida 1 and a merida big nine xt. The silverback felt much more alive than the merida even though the merida had better spec. The new merida have a new frame so it might feel better.
Maxixis Crossmark UST on the rear and Monorail on the front worked very very well for me. The Crossmark UST is a bit heavy but it can take a lot of beating.
