  1. At Karoobiax last year I ran 700 x 38c Specialized Triggers on a CaadX and found them a bit harsh on corrugated sections. I’m now busy building a Cotic Escapade and plan on running 650b x 50c. Should be a much more cumfy ride. I’m also 100% sure the Cotic steel is going to be alot more forgiving than the alloy CaadX.
  2. Have been looking out for those since the launch on kickstarter. Crazy about the idee, but looks like predicted pricing is going to be in the range of a top spec gps unit. Then again the kind of bike I would put this on would come down to the same comparison. A custom built steel frame can cost the same as a top spec carbon frame. I suppose each to his own.????
  3. What the driver of the car did was uncalled for and totally unacceptable, but then I ask the question what caused his anger and frustration? I think we all know the answer to this one, but where they perhaps cycling side by side?
  4. Local groups at 06:00 from Engen at Sandbaai/Hemel&Aarde intersection. Usually road and mtb groups and pace varies. Also a 06:00 holiday group from Voëlklip circle, road and mtb. The Voëlklip bunch use to be 20/30+ over Desember, but numbers has decreased over the years.
  5. You can go from Greyton to Caledon and then to Hermanus via Hemel en Aarde valley, about 150km out and back. We ride the N2 stretch from Caledon to Botrivier on the odd occasion as part of a loop from Hermanus through the valley, past Botrivier and R43/Karwydersroad back to Hermanus, but usually in a group. I myself not crazy about it, it is the N2 and cars are doing hi speeds. Pity you don’t want to do gravel as the possibilities are endless around Greyton.
  6. Your mate can buy a road bike with disc brakes. The technology is here to stay, it's not going away. Besides it being beter performance in wet and dry the Industry and manufacturers are gonna push it. It's only a matter of time before UCI will have no choice to allow it.
  7. Nice bikes guys. I also own one of Dave Mercer's stunning creations. Will post some pics soon.
  8. You've got that right and the wind can pump on those karoo vlaktes.????
  9. The Lyne is a good deal and they have been getting good reviews on their products. SLX at R1399 also a very good deal and solid product. Think its 1gram heavier than an XT, otherwise probably the same thing apart from the name and colour.
  10. By the looks of those Strava stats it may appear that the 9th of October is going to be an eventful and interesting afternoon.????????
  11. Hi!! Thanks guys, that's very reassuring. Has anyone got a tripple road crankset for sale?????
  12. That's the gearing I'm also planning to use. Just a little bit concerned about the little hill on day 1 when you've already got 180kms in your legs.????
  13. Going on the different posts on all forms of social media/forums, it seems there is going to be an interesting spread of bikes on the startline. Out of curiosity was just wondering what kind of gearratios some of you guys are considering?
  14. Giant Durbanville had some off those available at one stage.
  15. That Giant looks the best of the lot and with Giant it will always be good value for money backed by a solid warranty.
  16. I run Trp mechanical discs combined with Dura-ace levers, more than enough stopping power. With the amount of traction/grip available on the skinnier tires, you don't have to go hydraulic brakes.
  17. I'm rebuilding a set of Stans Flow rims that are a couple of years old. Was considering having the rims anodised in different colour. Has anyone had any bike parts done or have any experience with anodising as to possible risks or don'ts. Will appreciate any input.
  18. Between the two, SLX will do the job just fine. Do consider Sram aswell. I recently went from M8000 der and shifter to NX rear der and GX shifter with sunrace 11/46 casette. Loved the Shimano but found the rear der just to soft and vunrable to my liking. Sram has a more mechanical feel to it, but that is personal choice.
  19. The Pyga 110 or if you can manage a test ride, I just moved from a hardtail 29er to Pyga 120/650, awesome trail bike and all the comfort you will need for a stage event. I definately agree with Myles that just about 80% of people are on the wrong bikes.
  20. I would not recommend any heat or flame on a carbon crank. Aluminium maybe, but very low heat.
  21. You can't go wrong with XT or SLX , but while you're replacing those parts i would definately go to 11 spd.
  22. A fantastic person and always had time to talk to you. A great loss to cycling, local and international. Condolences to his loved ones.
