no jokes ... when I go out and then get back home the wife has been going like a machine ... something about since working from home with covid, she does not like doing the work while I am here as I 1. get in the way 2. ask what she is doing 3. am on calls or Zoom meetings, etc.
works for me I say

If expensive engine damage then as long as it's been replaced all should be well. What was the reason for the write-off?
The bike is with We Buy Cars, and the agent said he would try and find all this information for me.
In the background though, the bike has a sticker from where I assume it was purchased, and I have also sent them an email asking if they have any information and sent them the VIN no. to check if they are willing to assist.
Sooo ... what are your thoughts on a newish BMW that was written off by insurance, then fixed up and being sold again?

Thw owners of these bike ar the ones from whom I was thinking that the ad may tease out a reaction.
What's a YT Jef?
my 2018 YT Jeffsy AL size large ... bought her 2019 (Ex. demo) did a bit of riding, had issues with the dropper and the cassette where she sat for a while, then got a new e-13 cassette with chain and a new RS dropper post, our friend covid came along and then I may have taken her off road maybe twice with a short roadie ride or two around the block type of riding.
I am not using her, and prob. won't be using her anytime soon.
Pending what bike I look at, I may be able to also just try and sell the frame with crankset then carry over the fork and drive train to my STR.

Have you considered putting up a "Wanted" advert on Wild Dogs in the Buy and sell section? There may be somebody there thinking of selling but not yet sure and knowing you're looking may convince them to sell.
Not just yet, but I have been speaking to people I know, one of whom noted that he had a 2012 GSA that he loved and cared for from birth, then decided he wanted to get a KTM Adv and sold the GSA to his brother in law, who in turn added this to his vast collection of bikes and since then the bike has seen limited mileage.
He estimates it to be at 44K.
He reached out to him yesterday to see if he may be interested in selling the bike ... so that is a good wait and see idea.
Other than finding a nice oil/air cooled bike, I may take the approach of waiting a little longer and saving up a bit more to get a 2016 and younger liquid cooled GSA .... with the idea that the market would see more of them coming out in a few months, and hopefully a good few with low mileage that have been garage queens that gets parked outside the local coffee shop on Sunday mornings.
So I am aggressively browsing and learning at the same time, if the right bike pops up, then great, if I wait a bit for the right bike then so be it. A bit more expensive right bike right now, may mean me having to see the YT Jef. to bridge the gap (I do not like financing things, so cash in hand is the way to go for me).
16 minutes ago, IceCreamMan said:Those panniers/top box are hellishly expensive so factor that into it too. And it’s a GSA.
I don’t have any knowledge of ZA bike prices but 71000 kms is not a train smash. These things run hundreds of thousands kms.
edit. Just ran a quick search here. 110grand in ZA is cheaper than what they sell for here all things being equal. The value placed on the GS range is incredible.
Still going to push them on price
2 minutes ago, IceCreamMan said:Yes. No one is going to buy an older model unless it’s deeply discounted. The new one marginally more expensive. Same with the 850 gs range.
I went to test a 2011 GSA 1200 today.
Mileage is high at 71K
Servicing is on point with the dealer all the way through
General condition is really good.
I found a custom made alum bracket with a GoPro mount on it .. turns out the guy meant to be. well know in motorcycling circles and may have a YT channel.....ring a bell for anyone
Price is a little on the steep side at R110k, this includes the alum top box and paniers, a set of shorty levers that feel strange to use and a steering damper.
I could only test the bike up and down the road. This was enough to determine that the bike does not dip and dive like the other 2011 that I tried out over the weekend. This bike was certainly also a bit nippier.
Took the seat off and the bike was nice and clean with the cables all neat and tidy the one from the weekend looked like a mouse nest RE the wiring.
Dealer is going to see what he can do RE the price, but R110K for a 71,000km bike is a bit heavy for me to accept.

Phenomenal
And what a legend
7 hours ago, IceCreamMan said:Dealers offering the 850gs and 850gs adv at good prices here now. Same with 1250 gs range.
is this due to the 1300's being on the market?
14 minutes ago, Andymann said:Actually the AG200 is way better - but it has a stigma attached that it's a farm bike. Same engine, same dodgy suspension but just a much better package
interesting and I am sure more maneuverable with the narrower tyres
but then the xt250 would be more capable again?
14 minutes ago, Andymann said:I was part of the S10 test team when we were busy evaluating it before the SA launch. We had a KTM, a Triumph, a GS and the S10. This is what we found -
The KTM was the best off-road - like a big MX bike but it wasn't great on-road
The GS was excellent as a big Adventure tourer but wasn't as good as the KTM off road.
The S10 was kind of in-between - it was better than the GS off-road, but not as good as the KTM, but not as good as the GS on-road but way better than the KTM.
The problem was the Triumph which was just a better all-rounder than everything everywhere - luckily in 2010 Triumphs were not that popular.
The Japanese could not understand why South Africans would want to take an S10 on anything other than maybe a dirt road - and even that was a shock for them!
I wouldn't completely ignore an S10 - they are incredibly reliable so you won't have issues and they can be had now for good money - but I wouldn't want to take one too far off a gravel road!
Just my 5c!
Thanks ... I am more confused now
12 minutes ago, Andymann said:Having said that - if you can take a TW200 across 5 miles of hell you can probably take anything!
I like the TW200
Did my k53 on one .... they just bloody expensive second hand for what you are getting ... but should be a blast to play with in the bush
I know we discussed ST's the other day, but this looks decent

Looking to test this bike out today or tomorrow.
https://www.gsbiketraders.co.za/bikes/arriving-soon-2011-bmw-gsa-1200,-top-box-and-panniers
I have been sent a full set of good pics, and she looks to be in good condition and is meant to have a full BMW service record....given the mileage that would be key.
10 minutes ago, sawystertrance said:All good logic and quite true. Just as a matter of interest what was discussed with the ST owner to give you mixed feelings?
He said the bike turns in very suddenly where he (Had a GS before) found the GS to handle better a slower speeds on the trail ... so I understood it.
Loves his bike though, and it sounds like he takes her on many a romantic dirt adventure.
EDIT: The other factor in my mind is that there are a gazillion GS bikes out on the trails, with the service centers and spares to sustain this mass of vehicles vs far less numbers of ST bikes. Following the hitches to get spares for the HD, my logic leans towards a simpler life with the GS from a maintenance and accessories point of view.
I think with me looking at the older GS models for a first stab at this bike format, the resale on the GS should be good in a year or two when I would then be certain as to investing in it with a new or demo model bike, or if I will move to another genre of motorcycling.
With the above in mind, I think a BMW will sell again faster than the Super Tenere.
On 1/20/2024 at 6:53 AM, sawystertrance said:Hairy, just a thought. Given your preference for shaft drive - a wise one I might add - have you considered a Yamaha Super Tenere? Good reliable bikes and I think you should get one for less than a GS. Just a thought..Unless you have reasons for preferring the GS.
Edit:

LOL .. thanks for the links.
Went to builders over the weekend and saw a older guy walking to a ST, so I stopped him to have a quick 30min chat (My was not amused) and left with mixed feelings about it. Need to do a little more homework on my side.

Swartberg looks cool
16 minutes ago, sawystertrance said:Just my 2c. Yes the GS is big but that has advantages in wind and in visibility. Surprised to hear cars cut in on you but as you say, a loud exhaust and a couple spots should sort that. As mentioned by others it's not an enduro bike but then I wouldn't want to ride an enduro bike long distance. Swings, roundabouts etc. What others do on their GSs is irrelevant to you. If they want to buy one and never go off-road, so what? It's a great all-round bike and despite the pisstaking from riders of other bikes, will serve you well. The most important thing is to decide exactly what you want to do with it.
Shotto ... it will be a daily ride wherever bike ... and maybe go explore the odd gravel road to start with when I go for a ride out.
I like picking a direction and going that way to see where the road takes me, on some of those roads there have been a gravel road or two that I wondered where it went to. Some gravel roads the Harley has done already, even with a pillion
What I do know I do not want is a bike with a chain that need to cleaned and maintained ... to much PTSD from cycle commuting for many years in any weather in CT
I recon this could still come down to 80K
