  1. Continental race king II in 2.2. Fastest mtb tyre I've ever ridden. Fair grip.
  2. Good on you for trying to commute on a single speed. My recommendation would be to try a 1x10 or 1x11 setup first. I'm my mind at least, a mild-moderate workout before work is one of the best parts of commuting. Another reason I'm not running for an ebike right now is simplicity. All I want to do is the once a week tyre pressure check and chain lube and off I am. If you aren't enjoying the route as it is just too strenuous, I can see the point of an ebike. I'd go for a rear hub motor setup by someone like chilled squirrel. That way you can still pedal without the extra wear on your drivetrain hy the motor. All the best Oh ja. High viz jacket, front and rear lights and a little mirror is an absolute life saver.

    Grippy flat pedals

Don't under estimate the new dmr v8. Price and durability is good. Bushing replacement cheap and easy as pie.

    Microshift

My son's microshift 1x10 setup on his titan 20 inch bike is fantastic. Wide range with crisp quiet accurate shifting. And that's the bike that gets ridden the most often in this house.
  5. My take on flats vs clipped in. Flats for everyday commute and all riding done on my trail full sus bike. I wear Adidas/fiveten shoes on dmr vaults. But have used crank bros stamp/dmr v12/e13 etc with good results. I have clipless setup (lake shoes) and would only ride them on hardtails/gravel/road or super short travel fs bikes as they tend to bounce my feet around a bit more when unweighting my bike over choppy stuff. I know people like DdT ride ultra rough trails on hardtails, but he's quite a bit lighter than me and I fear I'll smash my rear wheel in no time with the heels down hulk smash approach. In terms of efficacy. Legs are designed to push. Knees are definitely not designed to pull. Tiring out your stabilisers may result in abnormal knee dynamics in the weekend warrior. I'm sure the pro roadies have popliteus muscles the size of the average Joe's medial gastrocnemius. I can crank out 50 extra watts if I actively push-pull on the IDT for a few minutes. But from practical experience in riding both flats and clipped in on the smart trainer, there is zero difference.
  6. Hate that post hijack jitters. Traumatising as hell. We should probably hide airtags on our bikes and track these guys. Been putting it off. I'll buy one today and in case of unfortunate events send some bigger bader more paraat guys than myself to retrieve my bike.

    Squirt Lube

Isopropyl is readily available at hardware shops. I buy a big can of wurth disc brake cleaner. Also doubles as a flame thrower for those knopiespinnekop corner nests in my garage. (metal door and brick surfaces only.). Cleaning pots and pans of wax is best done at 100deg celcius with the addition of sunlight liquid. Make wax slabs/discs first to save on candles for round two.

    Squirt Lube

Literally remove your chain and dunk in heated molten candle wax. Penetrates the rollers etc. Apparently works well. Remember to discard the molten dirty wax in hot liquid form down the kitchen sink. This is important.
  9. Not sure if mine is Gen 2. Currently riding 38t on it though. No issues. (I have the orange/blue/grey str frame.)
  10. I like that LOOK hardtail frame. The fork is interesting enough. Whish they made it Clydesdale rated. Not a bad fork for commuter/light gravel.
  11. This week feels promising!
  12. Think nic or someone from the hub did a review on the trail version a few years back. Some drawbacks. Some strengths. No deal breakers.
  13. Everytime I watch Cape Epic I'm pleasantly surprised about their ability represent both the male and female racing in such a way that one doesn't detract from the other. This year the ladies racing had been so intense to watch. Daai Amy is hardcore.
  14. Pretty cool bike then. If I was lighter I'd love to try those lauf forks. The frame is a real eye-catcher.
  15. I think it's fair use of the forum to come ask public opinion on value. Whish we stil had ad comments. I wouldn't buy a carbon HT second hand for various reasons. Some anecdotally supported. But if light stiff hardtail for munga/k2c/361 etc is what you're looking for. 35k isn't bad all in. Given the components and frame are in good condition.
  16. Pretty nice hardtail. R35K is within the ballpark
  17. Not a bad price for an e-bike with a solid warrantee. Any issues in the interim? Spec wise etc? Keep us posted.
  18. Yup. Have the 11-50 deore groupo on my otherwise premium bike at the moment. Maybe non cable derailer for me one day.
  19. All I read was even cheaper 1x11 components in the near future. I\'m more than happy to scavenge perfectly working parts off those who want to ride the \"best\".
  20. Honestly. Id only consider an ebike for commuting if I was staying more than 30km from work, Even then I'd probably see it as free training hours. I commute 15kmx2 daily. Usually don't arrive too sweaty at work. The last bit of the route I put in minimal effort and use it as a cool down period. If it is hot and humid and I arrive drenched, I just use a basin-wetcloth-bodywash-wetcloth-drytowel-roll-on technique. Fresher than before the ride. Takes 5-10min. Sub 10km commutes are almost always faster than traffic anyways. Make sure your bike is tubeless and insured. Carry lekker pepper spray on your shoulder strap. If it rains a little, get fenders and a jacket/backpack cover. Otherwise catch a lift/uber.
  21. Such a lekker ride. Weather was too perfect. Enjoyed the cool ocean breeze. Met and chatted to plenty of people along the way. The chirpiest were the tandem people. Keen to get my wife to ride along one day. One thing that did annoy me: 99% of the ebikers were courteous in not riding too differently when the group was chilling on the up hills at sub ebike limiter speeds.... Then out of nowhere! A chump or chumpette would shout "ON YOUR RIGHT!!!" coming past an already congested climb road and expecting everyone to just respect the lithium king. Definitely embarrassed the ebikers chilling with us in the bunch. We'd invariably catch them on the flats and downs, then again later... the same person.. ."ON YOUR RIGHT!!" causing the whole group to swerve/re-adjust again. It's fine if you are unseeded and putting in actual inspirational blood and sweat effort under your own power. At least you'd think twice about rushing a group and losing all that effort for nothing if we don't move in time. You're not proving anything by rushing groups on climbs with your ebike. If anything, you're just missing out the amazing scenery and annoying the sh#t out of us ATP fueled mortals. Besides that minor recurrent annoyance. It was a superb 11/10 spectacular day. Have the jersey tan and post argus downness to show for it.
  22. Oof. Was about to contact them re- some of their helmets... Now I'm not so sure. Keep us posted.
  23. @Furbzyou raise an excellent point here. You may be utterly and completely outwitted/overpowered despite your most vigilant/prepared attempts. I guess one has to be aware that these guys may want to use what you have on you... On you. And those "smart triggers" never really demonstrated reliability. Sigh. Complete compliance is certainly wise in a case like that. Thanks for sharing and sorry that you had to experience that.
