  1. Yes absolutely, but we have also learned that we have to be careful about the consequences and goals of the changes we make. This thread for me has revolved around whether we make food (and other) choices based on the reliance on animals or insects, impact on the planet, or personal health and wellness. Your answers will be different depending on which your priorities are.
  2. They're a brilliant shop if you like cheese and pork products, or free range eggs, but perhaps you might expect that they're not particularly vegan focused? Have you tried asking for vegan products in a butchery - it just feels like you set yourself up for that. Vegetarian cheese is however an important distinction for many people. French cheeses in particular are often made with animal rennet (rennet is an abbatoir product from cows/beef). The majority of South African cheeses are made with vegetarian rennet, and therefore vegetarian. Both use live cultures.
  3. On YouTube - The eye of the Pangolin (45 minutes) Eye of the Pangolin. Official Film [HD]. The search for an animal on the edge. - YouTube quite engaging documentary on the African pangolins
  4. Should be every 6 years, can be as good as every 12 (but that seems ambitious). The Lithium batteries are waranteed for 10, not sure how long they last (not forever though). Edit - We've got Lithiums out in the bush these days because they can probably better handle the abuse of various untrained users - one of our users tried to run a washing machine on the lead acids we have installed, which was just about the last thing to run on them. The Lithiums also give you expansion options because you don't have to run them in cohorts. If you're running them yourself, and if you are running low reactive power appliances (TV and lights) then the economics are probably comparable.
  5. anyone can feel it, you can only read it once trained
  6. Complex issue: Protect women's sports while welcoming trans athletes (usatoday.com) The Biden administration said that any school that receives federal funding must allow biological boys who self-identify as girls onto girls’ sports teams or face action from the federal government. There is now some organised push back from a woman's group - on this one I do hope they succeed.
  7. It's an interesting debate - the biggest socially acceptable driver in reducing the number of kids on the planet seems to be the education of girls. Do you think it is easier to make a difference to education or to change the way people eat (I honestly don't know, but I do struggle to believe in veganism changing the planet). What you do in your household isn't going to make a difference either way.
  8. Well it's only the least favourite because it looks like they didn't include having less people on the planet as an option (making less people), Might be an easier mountain to climb than global veganism. As a species we prefer solutions that don't require changes in behaviour.
  9. There it is. hidden in plain sight. Maxxis Ardent or Ardent race. Have been a staple for me in Swaziland and Mpumalanga trails, good stable tyre.
  10. They should just set a higher connection fee for a bi-directional meter, no idea how you would enforce it otherwise (and it would make sense that they could charge you more if you also had the ability to earn something back on your solar production). Then we need to remind them that they have one moerse battery in the sterkfontein dam to save up that extra productions for when the sun goes down.
  11. Good responses above, but there are perhaps 2 price points you should think about. For under R20k you could install a 3kVa inverter/charger (R5,000) and probably 4 lead acid deep cycle batteries (R2,000 each). I have run a set of 8 lead acids for 5 years now and those are enough to see me through interruptions of up to 7 or 8h. I have no solar panels attached. Use this to power your TV, wifi and lights in the living area. I may eventually replace them with lithium, but for the moment the lead acids are fine. If you rather want to build a (semi) off-grid solution you should be thinking about R100k for the install. This would give you solar panels, lithium batteries, and enough power to run basically the whole house. The issue for me is that certain high reactive power loads are just not good for batteries. I would guess that the cost to your batteries of running a hairdryer, airconditioning, an electric kettle, your pool pump is what will push you over the edge.
  12. Why is a donut measured in 8's?
  13. Except Strava only works on heart rate while riding? I was thinking this has parallels with Wimpie vdM's training advice - basically tailor your training to your waking up heart rate scores. Have been meaning to give this a try.
  14. on the upside the 8-sp arrangement should be almost maintenance free and bombproof (I'm reminded of my gardener who arrived to show me he had 'upgraded' his second hand 11s groupset to 9s for reliability ). The extra ratios will give you more intermediate options which are helpful if you are trying to hold on to a group (the issue is trying to keep up when +1 gear is too hard, but the one you are in is too slow). If you're riding alone you probably won't miss them. I'm assuming that the inner and outer ratios are basically the same as on a more closely spaced 11s groupset.
  15. Causes heart disease when fed to monkeys. I'm not sure if the study was ever extended to humans.
  16. I found an article recently that points out that if you want to lose 10 kilos, then 8.4 kilos must be exhaled as Carbon Dioxide. I would prefer that there was some better indication of just how fast that CO2 was moving.
  17. North of Sandton? Head out to the cradle. There is a decent single track route round the cradle. Your options to ride from home are more limited - maybe find a club ride to join
  18. They clearly were not aware of you, but nevertheless they're at fault - they should have signaled that they were turning and moved to the centre line when stopping at the light (who turns right from the left kerb). If they had been on the centre line when the light went green then there would be no issue?
  19. There's a pun on a puffin hunt in there somewhere
  20. Basically we thought about penalising you, but we were laughing so hard at your obvious incompetence and public humiliation that we couldn't bring ourselves to impose a real penalty..
  21. Great experience for me. Submitted Monday pm, refunded this morning.
  22. you have to scan the barcode. Marketing 101..
  23. That looks like the same size bracket as the Ryder version. Sportsmans warehouse..
