  1. you'll also need a boost spacer and longer bolts to move the disk out a bit. consider buying the boost hub and rebuilding?
  2. not technical, but long and slow. I'm struggling to follow the exact route, but some of those roads can be quite corrugated. The website suggests that it is a hard route - it's not the same as 50k's of tarmac. I did 100 in that area last weekend and suffered through it. On further inspection the maps on their website are upside down - this is the route on Strava. 51.2 km Road Cycling Route on Strava you've got about 3km of softer sand and corrugation to start early on, then smoother roads all the way to Magaliesberg at the 25km mark. 6km of railway after that is ok, then down a rocky dip (watch this part - the rock ledges sticking out of the road surface can be a bit jarring), and on to a segment known as slow poison which climbs steadily for the next 7km. Then 6km of sand and corrugations gets you back to the tar. last 5km are flat and should be relatively smooth.
  3. There's a lot to be said for a vegetarian diet and I'm generally very supportive, but - 1. AFAIK there have been no vegan cultures (Have There Been Any Vegan Cultures or Civilizations? – I Am Going Vegan) 2. medical consensus seems to be that the biggest nutritional challenges for vegans are pregnancy and young childhood development. At 64 you'll likely be just fine, but the generalisation to apply that to society at large doesn't hold.
  4. I run Shimano road levers with Magura calipers. Works better than the original - also not recommended. I've also mixed MTB XT calipers and 105 road hydraulic levers quite successfully. ???? Go for it. On the lesser models (other than XTR) I suspect that a lot of the calipers are identical with different paint jobs. It will work just fine. 5. This may depend on how you feel about unnecessary things like happiness and self-actualisation. Would we all still get out of bed and make all the necessary things if we couldn't sometimes go and blow the paycheck on unnecessary stuff just for the hell of it.
  6. I would suggest you buy one of these before doing anything else. brake shoe alignment is your best friend Icetoolz 55B1 Croco Brake Shoe Tuner | Workshop | Product | Cycle Lab
  7. I've always felt that the French issue is more fundamental - they're more interested in the spectacle that the sport. JAP (and ChouChou before him) styles himself as a break-away rider/stage winner (lose time early, get lots of time on TV) rather than a GC contender. You might conclude it is part of being French. The Belgians are another story, but perhaps in their defence they may consider the classics to be more true to cycling than the grand tours. I rode the RVV and Roubaix sportifs a few years back. The Belgian race had 20,000 participants, it was timed from start to finish, tons of Belgian riders and all of Oudenaarde had shown up for the party at the finish. The French race had 4000 entries, they had 2 timed segments of about 1km each over a 160km course, and I'd guess that all of about 4 French riders had shown up. Religion vs. reality TV.
  8. I have to say I like the look of this arrangement a lot more - hubs are fixed to 2 independent axles. cluster is the screw-on type (i.e. includes freewheel). Bearings look like they're almost an automotive trailer spec. StreetFighter QuadCycle DIY Plan | AtomicZombie DIY Plans
  9. My other idea would be to find some track bike hubs and swap out the axle for something that will not risk bending. track bike axles are basically just threaded bar so I'm guessing you might find something of appropriate spec
  10. I was curious enough to do some searching: This chap made his own - Tutorial – No Lathe Trike Hubs | AtomicZombie DIY Plans
  11. He's talking about the Cannondale Lefty front wheel hub - it mounts onto the fork (frame) with a single allen key bolt, and it would be easily up to spec on a rear wheel mount with the right 'nut' on the frame (oops - correct nut rather). You'll find a few in the classifieds if you search for Lefty. Only question is whether you want a rear-wheel drive arrangement, in which case you wouldn't be able to use these and I guess you'd need to have a drive-axle manufactured with free-hubs on both sides.
  12. at what point can you consider yourself grown up? asking for a friend
  13. just say yes. sometimes people can't make up their mind on buying ????
  14. Can you order a coffee in a bidon?
  15. There's a thing called a 'near miss'. In the safety industry we use them to make sure there are less real accidents.
  16. I can't buy into the idea that our athletes should make the most of whatever they're given and be happy with it - this isn't school sport. Professional sport is about preparation in so many ways, and part of being prepared is having the right kit, and if your national organisation isn't up to the task you're not going to perform at the same level as better prepared nations. I also believe that frustration and dissatisfaction are often the route to making things better. I don't think this is a cost issue - I mean we have flown(?) a couple of horses to Japan for the equestrian events, and it's not like we're coming home with those medals. What does a plant ticket cost for a horse. De Bod should have better equipment - he's beaten a lot of really big names without a level playing field, and he only has a few opportunities to do so in his life. Either that or perhaps he should also be packing his bags for a country that will better support him.
  17. CSA fined one of our riders in the last olympics for making his own skinsuit. it's just silly that they can't get their heads around the way time trialing technology works these days.
  18. It is weird though when the olympics are raced under different conditions to all the other events. Does anyone know if the olympic qualifier events are also radio free?
  19. Nah - they do stuff like that just to spite the Dutch ????
  20. a queue of riders and officials crossing the track. None of them should have been there
  21. This is good advice. stability and confidence is key
  22. Get a pair of quick link pliers. After that all chains are basically the same.
  23. Twitchyness is more about your fork/stem geometry than the width of your handlebars. I can't tell if it looks wrong from the pics, but if you want to make it work you might have to make further changes. Basically if you put 700c tyres on a 29er you get a smaller diameter wheel and a shorter fork trail - which is twitchy. I'm not sure what else changes when you swap out the handlebar.
