The 'Future Proof' comment may have been mine - it was more related to certain manufacturers not making rim brake bikes. Trek, Specialized etc. Giant is only bringing the disc versions in now. They are pushing disc technology as the new standard and rim brakes are now 'old technology'. There are still many brands that offer both and some that haven't moved at all. I am having the discussion now after having just recently buying a beautiful Trek rim brake bike and crashing it again - rim brake frames are in short supply. If they only have disc brake frames in a year or two, it would be a very expensive transition (brakes + wheels) if I were to stick with that brand. So, I am considering trying to make the change to disc when I get the new frame now. I didn't mean to imply that rim brakes are obsolete - they are still very relevant. Certainly lighter and easier to maintain too. I also don't think that disc brakes will stop a bike any quicker as there is only so much grip the tyres can get from the road - that's the limit, not the method of braking.

I finally found this (and the English subtitles) Watched the first 2 episodes last night and am hooked! I hope Season 2 isn't far behind It's so much better than the 3 part mini series. For good measure, I also watched the Tom Cruise movie recently.

What bikes are you looking and what sort of budget are you playing with ? I bought a rim brake bike because it was well priced, lighter and more simple (2019 model which was R20k cheaper and about 300g lighter than the 2020 disc model), but discs brakes are the way that many manufacturers are going. If something ever happened to the frame that required replacement in a few years, there is a possibility that there wont be rim brake models available and then the switch to discs will be an expensive operation. So brake performance aside, getting a disc brake bike will be future proof (until the next technology comes along).

I crashed a few days before lockdown, so as soon as trade was open again, I got this bad boy. Generally a very nice bike, but the carbon wheels braking performance do not fill me with confidence in the dry, so am terrified to ride in the rain. The price of the bike was attractive, especially since there was a R20K gap between this and the 2020 disc brake version. But I do wonder if I should make the switch to disc sooner rather than later - just to be a bit more 'future proof'.

Congrats. I wish you many happy and safe miles Apart from the taxi tyres, I also note the lack of disc brakes. That must be one of the last few 'normal' brake frames around. I am looking at a new bike and having a dilemma about calipers vs discs and being 'future proof' etc

What is the problem(s) with this scale? I find it very inconsistent - I need to put the empty portafilter on it several times (in exactly the same spot) to get the readings the same. So when I put back on with ground, I am never sure I am getting a reliable weight. The point of getting a scale was to help with consistency
