  1. The Comrades are those guys who are not really into racing it, but would rather ride with friends who fall into different catergories from each other.
  2. Road Cycle Racing is a tactical endurance sport where exposure to wind plays major part. A 10% increase in speed requires 33% increase in power to overcome the increased drag , and sheltering behind another cyclist may reduce your exposure to wind speed by 50% and your power requirement to 12.5% , conserving your energy and extending your endurance. . So road cyclists are always going to get rotating pace lines going or look for a wheel to shelter behind, it is not in-ethical - it’s the very essence of the sport, and yes we do take up a bit more of the road sometimes. The problem is not so much with cyclists it with the mindset of motorists who do not believe that they have to share the road with anyone. I Joined my first cycling club in 1966, and have continued racing bicycles for the whole of the 47 years since then. I have survived on the roads without any major interaction with motor vehicles by adopting early on an aggressive defensive tactic. I occupy my road space and force motorists approaching from behind to make a decision, either to slow down and wait, or to go around. Once I hear they have approached closer and have made the decision, I then more over to the left (or where I am now to the right) and gain myself and extra metre or so space.
  3. From The Zoutpansberger ; http://www.zoutnet.co.za/details/30-05-2013/now_the_time_to_enter_the_kremetart/19333 Author Isabel Venter. With this record-breaking Kremetart, accommodation for visitors is already fully booked and becoming a serious headache for the organizers. 5. Saddles were never seats because they were made of leather and Saddles fitted horses before there were bicycles. or something
  6. A wee heart rate spike at 10.5km .....

  8. Tumbles you need written permission to wear that shirt !
  9. The Massive HUB crash wiped out this event from the Forum. Entries close tomorrow, Saturday 8th June 175km in four easy stages, food and refreshment fter each stage and a Potjie afterwards. Sunday 9th June Kremetart MTB Races This year, the mountain bike race of the PPC Kremetart Cycling Race will be hosted in the form of a cross-country Olympic event. Cross-country Olympic (XCO) is a popular mountain bike discipline which is the only form of mountain biking that is an Olympic sport. XCO consists of lap racing around a short circuit containing various obstacles that must be negotiated. Apart from fitness, XCO also requires serious bike-handling skills. This year, the Kremetart Mountain Bike XCO will be hosted in the Komatieland Forestry area on 9 June, the day after the big 175km, four-stage road race. Depending on all the age categories that enter, a total of 12 races will be held on the course. The goal is to complete the required laps in the fastest time possible. Pre-entries for the MTB XCO are currently open for those interested and will close on 24 May. There will also be time to enter before the race from 06:30 on the day of the race. For more information readers can log on to www.kremetartcycling.co.za.
  10. Not Cape town but I got it within a week. http://www.justridin...frame-tape.html Cut your own shapes.
  11. I have been trying to buy a bike for my daughter who relocated to Perth from London. She sold her bike in London when she left and I said I will replace it for her. So I contacted 5 Perth Bike shops via their very nice web sites this week. Only one bothered to respond and he did not offer any discounts so CRC will be cheaper even with the postage etc.
  12. I stop sign is a red light on continiously. Traffic lights control one lane a at a time. The act for each reads " Shall Stop" After stopping you may proceed.
  13. A Red Traffic light is of course just like a Stop sign. At a red light you "Shall Stop" but once having stopped and if the road is clear you may proceed.
  14. Look at when it was started. 1295 Pages in under a month!
  15. I ride my bike as my own form of Zazen these days. There is no longer any goal attached to my cycling, I just do it, instead of sitting staring at a wall each day I just ride my bike.
  16. We ride early mornings, (5am) and at night, so the traffic is the wildlife on the mountain, nd temperatures are cooler. The wildlife can be dangerous though, Justin wiped out two nights ago when I porcupine ran in front of him suddenly.
  17. See the new Exposure Reflex then, 2 200 lumen which automaticaly adjusts the power output depending whether you are grinding up the mountain or screaming down the single track. Not too much moolah if you say it fast enough - £465.00
  18. You know long term bikes stay about the same. My first Campagnolo crankset & BB (road) cost me R 26.50 new in 1968 - then it was about 27% of my monthly salary. To-day I can get a new Campagnolo crankset and BB with a far higher spec than the original for 3% of my monthly salary.
  19. You know, the owner of the bike shop where I bought my first lightweight equipment from (It was then little place in Main Street Jhb before they moved to make room for the Carlton Hotel) bought a Ferrari when he eventually sold his business. Ok, was not a Porche but only a Ferrari Dino, but he built his business at a time when a major cycling event in Johannesburg would expect to attact as many as 100 riders.
  20. Especially as : "It has a very long half-life, and can show up on a steroid test for up to 1.5 years, due to the long undecylenate ester attached to the parent steroid. Trace amounts of the drug can easily be detected for months after discontinued use." ...Maybe he just had some horse steak ....
  21. is this better?
  22. Same as most cars, if R 2800.00 is a fortune , then it is.
  23. a 700C X 23 is about 2080, but varies on make of tyre, and pressure you pump to. To accurately determine the correct setting ride a 20Km piece of road with Kilometer markings, and do the adjustment. For an example of the adjustment lets assume above your 102km race was accurately measured, then you need to adjust your wheel circumference like this: 2096 X102/82.61 = 2588. This is obviously wrong so look to see if your device is picking up all the wheel revolutions. or get a decent device.
