  1. Try that with your car and tell me what happens. Even with full motor plan, etc., etc. 1. Phone and check if they can assist. 2. Book a time slot. After thought - clearly the shop you got the bike from did a crap setup and didn't pre-stress the cables. looks like you got what you paid for. you plan to ride this thing in a race?!? what the hell you gonna do if something goes wrong, if you are so clueless as to how things work??? My 5 cents. Thanks Andrew for stepping up.
  2. Are you still talking about adjusting your gears?!?! "Fiddle in the garage" You weren't perhaps that oke on the cape town beach the other day were you?
  3. Playing card and a clothes peg!
  4. Search youtube - Pictures are worth a thousand words. But my limited understanding is: Align the front DR parallel to the chain rings. Adjust the height so that the DR just clears the big (outside) chainring. Adjust the DR indexing screw so that the DR does not pull the chain off the chainrings either inside or outside. Adjust the cable at the DR. Fine tune everything with the barrel adjuster on the shifter.
  5. Yeah, someone touched a nerve
  6. Thanks everyone. Lots to think about and try. I'm going to go with riding it with some momentum. Release front brake during the turn. Pedals horizontal, left forward (not goofy) Lean the bike. look at the exit - and HOPE / Prey :-) Riding Berg&Bush again this weekend, will let you know how this works out.
  7. Lmao. yes it was Solly's Folly where I went over the bars. :-)
  8. Need some advice on MTB Tech skills. Steep descent, out the saddle, weight well back, pedal horizontal. Braking hard front and back, wheels almost locking up - Speed, very slow. Rounded a left-hand switchback, ran a little wide: 1. Front wheel met a bump and stopped dead, sending me over the bars- slow motion. 2. Front wheel left the edge of the single track, washed out down the slope, lo-siding me slow mo. All I can think is that the hard braking on the front is the cause. Should I release the front brake as I turn into the switchback? Should I push the outside pedal down and stand on it as I round the switchback? Should I "soften" the front shock a little to allow it to compress a little easier? Should I slow down the rebound rate of the front shock? Front: Mountain King 2.4 @ 1.8 - 2 bar Rear: Race king 2.2 @ 1.8 bar SID Team shock
  9. road or MTB?

    Help!

Nuke some baby potatoes, with a little salt & margarine to taste - maybe even a little garlic. Put them in a ziploc bag when cooled. Good to go. I carry my energy bars & bananas in my camelbak and just get my ride partner to reach in and grab them on the go. Else, just stop and enjoy the view.
  11. Thanks to all for your feedback. It's been very useful, to the point that I'm almost ready to commit. Quite rewarding to get real info and not humour from the regular trolls, although I probably just invited all the trolls on-board with that comment:) I just need to see if my riding partner is up to it.
  12. Someone named Arnold was that determined and actually did it. In his first film, they changed his name to Arnold Strong in the credits. That irritated him to the point that he apparently said, one day the world will know me as Arnold and know exactly who I am. I'm sure he wasn't / isn't the only arrogant / determined champion out there.
  13. Saw a W2W entry for sale on the hub today.
  14. You mean the minister of Finance / home affairs / war office doesn't agree with one's vision?
  15. Why not just get the UST version. All UST's I have used, race king, mountain king, crassmax, all sealed up first time. No Meths, no fuss. Yeah, I haven't seen UST X-Kings available here either
  16. Thanks Kandui. Looks like I should move to CT - JHB is flat and boring, unless you drive out a bit. Traffic doesn't help either. I hate running too, also have a gimp ankle, it isn't the best for me.
  17. All I have read suggests that a typical training week is: 4-5 sessions per week approx 12-15hrs per week With back to back rides on weekends >4hrs per ride. So the weekend is easy, just ride on Saturday & Sunday = 8-10hours But how do you get the 2-3 rides in during the week? Monday off (maybe 45 min gym upper body) Tuesday 5am - 6:30am Wednesday 5am - 6:30am Thursday 5am - 6:30am Friday off (maybe 45 min more gym) Then there is also the suggestion of getting in a run once a week. When? How? count the running time as part of the total training time? Could Spinning work during the week? That's 7 days a week over 12 - 16 weeks. By that stage, haven't you lost interest.
  18. Then you get the Sabie Experience. 4 Days @ R 3 650.00 per team No Accommodation No Meals Lots of mud.
  19. Someone went tilt about Triathlons & triathletes and the elitism, etc., etc. (https://community.bikehub.co.za/topic/108552-amusing-triathlete-hating-blog/) Here's a thought, is MTB stage racing going the same way? Can't get an entry into the Sani2C, Epic, etc. At R 1000.00 per person per night. What kind of accommodation / experience could you buy? Add to that the cost of your training buildup. Travel to and from the event (Often air-fairs) Accommodation before and after the event. All the toys and gadgets. Never mind the small cost of a "nice' duel sus bike. Maybe this is getting seriously expensive? Just a thought.
  20. And how much is that quote?
  21. I have a Raleigh SP 500 spinning bike. OMG, it's the most uncomfortable thing I have ever tried to ride. I have changed the saddle but it's still crap to ride. My point is, make sure that whatever you buy its comfortable. It takes supreme motivation to ride this bastard!!!! On the other hand, I'll sell it to you for a bargain. :-)
  22. Like all gym work, a full range of motion is better. No point developing a limited range of motion. my 2 cents
  23. Huh?!? Sorry, to be doff, but can you explain a bit more. You lost me.
  24. That kinda fits what I've been seeing, 29ers "cruising" past me on the uphills like its no big deal (Dammit) If you shorten your chain, will it stop the chain slap? I also see that a medium RD is right on the limit as far as total capacity goes, but would that be a better option?
  25. Hi-jack - Sorry Along the same lines i.e. gearing. On a 26" and running 32 teeth front middle (22-32-44) and 32 teeth rear (11-32) 1 full rotation of the cranks (360 deg) will result in the rear sprocket & rear wheel being rotated through 1 full rotation. Same situation on a 29" i.e. one full rotation of cranks = 1 full rotation of the wheel. But the 26" has a smaller circumference compared to the 29"; hence the 29" will move further for that 1 rotation. Due to the larger radius of the 29" wheel, there is more leverage / resistance against this rotation. Hence its harder work to get this extra distance - all things equal. So a 29" climbs better but is also harder work for equal gear ratios?? Is that a fair conclusion?? How does this workout in reality?
