  1. an agreement to raise prices is only an outcome which would be an additional charge. the fact they all met to discuss pricing is in itself an illegal act of cartel behavior.
  2. I think arrogant is appropriate for the time. today they are probably sitting there thinking "What If I approached this differently?" I recallmany cycle shops were moaning back then that they needed to protect their business from CRC and other online stores that were gaining traction locally. Also parallel importers were taking distributors market share so all parties felt they needed to collude to arrive at a mutually beneficial outcome.... and therein lies the rub. raising prices is not illegal, agreeing with your "competitors" to do the same is outright illegal and unfair on the consumer. May have changed their ways in the interim but they have the opportunity to change their minds and plead guilty, learned our lesson, saw the error of ways etc etc etc. But where does all this leave us cyclists? We still going to buy product and 95% of people will still buy in the same way from the same people because likely the market is more fair today anyway. Personally I think the timing of the fine and verdict is likely more hurtful than the verdict itself. I say this because in todays economy, a cash outflow of R4.6million and R4.2million (assuming fine is 10% of turnover) means more than a months operating capital. that's a lot of profit to set aside / provision for
  3. I think you need to look at the verdict in context of the practice pre 2008,then it makes more sense. It was actually some retailers who wanted price control and got support from distributors . One retailer famously posted the minutes and the other I believe was a large nation wide franchise. I think the verdict is pretty fair based on behavior at the time of the complaint
  4. Le peloton was the distributor for spaz at the time. Fine based on being the two members of the cartel with biggest market share and influence. No attempt at discouraging the cartel behavior was displayed if insider info is correct. Also both were arrogant enough to force the issue to trial as they sought to justify their behavior, I.e. Neither admitted to cartel behavior or really bothered to co-operate. Hence the lengthy process and fines.
  5. after sales service, the secret to a great marriage
  6. This site serves the commercial interest of the cycle trade. By participating were part of the system so how do we change the system of we feel so hard done by by those who have behaved in an uncompetitive manner?
  7. Pretty much my experience with the 705. I also have a Edge 1000 but I don't use it offroad. Just too expensive for mtb. Should have got a 520 instead. So I use the Edge 705 for MTB. Its been ticking over since February 2008 when I bought it on Garmins warranty upgrade for R1200-00 after my Edge 305 bricked itself. The 705 has not missed a beat and has only been to Garmin once for a reflash after an arsehole sent me a virus riddled route profile that corrupted the unit. after Navworld reflashed it its been back to its reliable self. Even talks to a Stages PM and I've tried several other PM's. No problem. Every Polar I've owned was just endless sh*t. Suunto, certainly improved but back up has always been a problem. Haven't bothered to even consider them as Garmin is just so good. Sigma ROX 10.0. Excellent unit for the money, let down a by a small cluttered screen.
  8. No point in supporting obsolete units. That's money and manpower better spent on new products. Garmin gets my vote. For multisport the Fenix units are unbeatable and support is simply stunning. Navworld does Garmin support Sa wide and they are superb. I've had only joy from the Garmin service since I stared using the Edge 305 in 2005. the software is pretty decent (Garmin Connect and Garmin Express) but needs a decent internet connection to work well. Fortunately you're not locked into Garmin software except for firmware updates. Polar used to have the best HRM's. they dropped the ball when Garmin entered the outdoor sports market because they figured this GPS malarkey wouldn't catch on due to unavailability of highest resolution signal (1m resolution signal is still reserved for military navigation). they maintained market share in the HRM market but lost the cycling computer market. Polar's refusal to adopt ANT+ (its owned by Garmin) for coms between peripheral devices limits it to on brand accessories or BT and BLE devices whereas nearly any sports device can talk to a Garmin. Although I consider the Polar bike computers to be good, I won't buy one due to this limitation. Garmin gets my vote again.
  9. Trek, spaz and cannondale seem to be pricing themselves into the stratosphere these days
  10. Ought it was 2017 model announcement. When is dragOn sports making the wheels and saddles and shoes available?
  11. any Giant stockist will have access to the helmets. I've seen them at the concept store in Town, Durbanville, Williams Bie SHop in Somerset West & Olympic cycles Kenilworth. Retailing around R1600-00
  12. I doubt swift was around in the early 90's when the original RS-1was launched.... Likely using the name with permission
  13. Tickets are just pieces of inconvenience. Tow the offending car away will much more of a inconvenience
  14. Coolio thanks
  15. Entries closed? Still available ?
  16. And they would be crazy to secure forex now as the ZARbis projected to gain against a predicted weaker USD by end Q3
  17. but similarly we should compare localRRP NEO price against local RRP Hammer price. we just have less discounting power as SA consumers so CRC is always attractive and a benchmark for fair pricing (to me anyway - flame suit on)
  18. South Africa being a small market, often gets a lower volume discount and additional freight charges due to distance from primary markets. Yes the stuff all comes out of China but sending a ship to SA costs more than sending a Ship to Europe or the US typical because they are smaller freighters will less volume per paying customer. You try and import a Hammer on your own and my $100 shipping will likely be conservative. Shipping a Canyon frame to SA is Euro 400- and I assume the Hammers box is going to be slightly smaller than a bike frame's box.
  19. R18655.99 +14% VAT = R21266-70 1% handling fee through customs = R21479.37 at the very least at present exchange rate. This is with a advertised 28% mark down. Comparing against an indicative price from Bicyclepower without a discount is a bit unfair. Locally NEO retails For R24999-00 before any discount. So around R22500 or thereabouts RRP in the uk is GBP1200 incl 20% VAT
  20. Ok so priceing wise Bicyclepower is notout the ball park in foact they're probably right in it. ($1200 + 14% ZAR VAT + $100 shipping per unit) X 15 = R22020. okes always forget about the VAT fact. US is not a VAT country and GST only applies to certain goods in some states. SA is a VAT country and jy akaenbetaal so lets hope that the USD weakens toward presidential elections time and maybe that 15 becomes a 10...
  21. Not without miracle oval rings
