  1. More often than not that animal will only reach "trophy" status quite late in life. By that stage he has already passed on his genes. But yes there is a risk of skewing population dynamics if you over-do trophy hunting.
  2. Lions and elephants need to be controlled, even more so than herbivore populations. Especially on smaller farms. But hunting isn't a method of controlling your population. You can however hunt a bull elephant or male lion, and use that money to translocate or contracept or whatever the rest of the population.
  3. Selling game live is one way of controlling your populations. But my guess is that its less profitable than hunting. You get less for a live animal than you'd get for someone hunting that same animal. Plus you're paying capture costs etc.. But if you can do it, great.
  4. There is no NEED to hunt. Most hunters see it as a way of getting away from it all, relaxation, being one with nature and all that stuff. As for hunting humans. Yeah, don't we all know a few we'd like to take out hey? I think juju would be high on many people's list! LOL
  5. Lekker, looking forward to your reply. The problem is you okes are focusing on the bad examples of hunters. The group of guys that get drunk, shoot from bakkies, wound animals and so on. I look past this at the end result. I have seen too many game farms bulldozed in order to plant agricultural crops.
  6. Hi Rookie. Yes there are different models one can follow. Having lots of different stakeholders combined into one property has massive complications in its own. There are very few that work well, Sabi Sand is one I can think of. We have a couple here in KZN, but the land owners don't all see eye to eye so they can't agree on how to manage the place. Also, what is the overall size of this property? If you have a full suite of predators on the property there will most likely not be a need to control herbivore populations. However, unless it is a big system like kruger, you still need to control your lion population. And elephants if they're present
  7. Why? At the end of the day that trophy hunter directly pays for the continued existence of biodiversity on that farm
  8. So its clear many people don't like the so called "vibe" that goes on during hunts. Yes I agree in many cases it is just one big piss-up. BUT there are also many ethical hunters out there, more than the drunks I'd say. But lets not get into the ethics of hunting, that wasn't what the debate was about. The argument from some was that hunting, in whatever form, should be stopped completely.
  9. So the comments on this thread https://community.bikehub.co.za/topic/178969-it-is-a-crazy-world-out-there/page-2 has prompted me to start this one. So we have 2 camps here, pro hunting and anti-hunting. There should be a third camp though, people that don't hunt themselves, but still believe hunting plays a role in conservation. Nowadays you dare not post a photo of yourself hunting on social media, for you will be attacked and hounded till the end of days. Just the other day I read the CEO of Panthera (a big cat conservation org) had to resign because someone dug up old photos of him hunting, and the greenies tore into the org. So a little background on myself first. I am a hunter, or at least I used to be. Now I'm too broke to hunt. BUT, I am also a conservationist working for a state conservation agency and I live on a game reserve. I have a Msc in Wildlife Management and 12 years’ experience working in conservation. So I think I'm qualified to debate this matter. I’m all for a healthy debate, so let me kick things off. Hunting has a HUGE role to play in conservation. For example: John Smith owns a 10 000ha game farm (Malema hasn’t taken it yet). This farm is his only source of income. Tourism alone doesn’t quite keep the bank manager happy and cover the costs of running the farm, so he allows a certain number of hunts every year. Without the hunting, his farm isn’t profitable anymore. So what’s he going to do? He’s going to change the land use and convert to agricultural farming, that’s what. And guess what happens to the bokkies, the trees, the grass and all of the associated biodiversity..?? It gets ploughed under and mielies are planted in its place. Or sugarcane, or whatever else is more profitable. Now, across SA you have thousands of John Smiths. Most have smaller farms where tourism isn’t profitable at all. So what must they do with their property if they can’t hunt? This is their livelihood and they cannot keep it in a natural state just for the sake of conserving wildlife. If all of them convert their game farms to agriculture there’ll be a MASSIVE loss of biodiversity. I cannot remember the figures now, but the majority of biodiversity in SA is actually found on private/communal land, not in protected areas/nature reserves as people think. This brings me to state owned game/nature reserves. Here we conserve for the sake of conservation, right? In the past, yes. In the new SA, NO. The old saying of “if it pays it stays” is now being applied. Most state owned reserves have been land claimed. The new owners demand compensation from their assets on an annual basis. Most state owned reserves (with the exception of Kruger) do not make enough money from tourism to run the reserve AND provide financial benefits to the land owners. Even where reserves haven’t been land claimed they are under immense pressure to provide some kind of beneficiation to neighbouring communities. Resource use, which includes hunting or culling and selling meat, is one way of providing benefits to these communities. To not have to hunt OR CULL at all on a property the property must be large enough for natural processes to take place. We have very few of those in SA, and I’d argue that Kruger is the only reserve large enough to be called “natural” whereby you do not need to control animal populations. Everywhere else you have to manage the wildlife populations. And that means either a hunter puts a bullet in bokkies (or predators) and pays the reserve/land owner handsomely for that privilege, or the land managers cull. Elsewhere in Africa you had large areas with game, whereby professional hunters could become concessionaires of an area. Not only did they hunt in these areas, but the protected the area from poachers, built infrastructure like roads etc and contributed financially to the local communities. Then the anti-hunting brigade managed to drive them out. Guess what happened? The bokkies had no more value to the communities other than filling their bellies, so there is NOTHING left. So, let’s here the opposing arguments
  10. Dusty do you perhaps have a gpx file of the route you took? I've been planning such a trip for a long time now , and was looking at another route more to the east, down to Ulundi

    Cricket......

From his point of view it is all fine to pick when and where you want to play. But remember, cricket is a team sport. it is not fair for someone to replace him, play a couple of games, do really well and settle in the team. Only to be told sorry we're dropping you, AB feels like playing again.. I would've been happy if he chose one format and stuck to it. But then he should be available for all the games, home and away.

    Cricket......

He copped a lot of critque for picking and choosing when and what format he wants to play. So ja, it probably had an influence on his thinking. Then it also doesn't help that we're playing only minnow teams for the next year or two. Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, whoopdeedoo.... Perhaps a game or 2 against Zim in between for good measure..

    Cricket......

He probably does have enough. But when is enough enough? It's like the SA rugby players. They own a sh*t load of money in SA, drive sponsored vehicles, get Puma/Adidas/Nike clothes and shoes for free, live in mansions and so on, but it's never enough. Once the pound come knocking then none of them say no thank you I earn enough here in SA

    Cricket......

What a loss to world cricket.. AB, you'll be sorely missed! As for his reasons. Rob Houwing wrote a piece on this, saying that a little piece of AB died at the last world cup when politics interfered and demanded Philander play instead of Morris (I think?). Just the other day AB told everyone he's back and enjoying his cricket again.. One IPL and he does a 360 degree turnaround (like only he can!). I think he's just gatvol of politics in SA cricket. He's not getting any younger, has had plenty injuries and want to coin it bigtime before he retires permanently. Who can blame the oke?
  15. Rode down to the river with my kids yesterday. Now I know why 2 bottle cages are so important.. When my youngest got to the river he didn't want to wear his shoes anymore, at least I had place to put them! LOL

    Cricket......

What was their scores at the end? I haven't watched a sincle IPL game yet. Just couldn't be bothered.. If I knew Quinny and AB were batting I would have watched though!
  17. Nearly rode over a black mamba. I was in the same track as it and luckily saw it in time to switch lanes and miss it. Couldn't stop in time so had to go past it and then tried to take a photo. Spot the tail disappearing in the grass. Only saw about 1/4 of it I think, but man it was THICK Thereafter I had more than enough adrenaline to climb this hill
  18. Which one for rear wheel? Maxxis IKON (TR/3C/Exo) - R450 Vittoria Barzo TNT - R420 I do mostly rocky, technical rides (XC) and a couple of marathons inbetween

Those are TEST rankings. We are one if not THE best test side in the world. But we suck at limited over cricket..

Cool! But is parnell still part of the protea setup? Probably t20?

    Cricket......

Imagine how well he could bowl if he wasn't fat.. So when are we going to see the Proteas in action again?
  22. Thanks for the replies. I feel naked without a watch on my wrist so can't really wait another 2 weeks, thanks for the offer though Kevin 07 I'm going for the one Andrew Steer posted. Funny, I searched for fenix 3 bands but never saw that one. Some of the links guys have posted earlier in this thread to bands for sale also didn't work.
  23. i see several okes have bought new bands for their watches. Mine broke this morning so I'm also shopping around. Does the fenix 5 band not fit on the 3? Takealot has every colour band for the 3 except black.. But they have a black band for the 5..

    Cricket......

I hope that Faf and Dean comes out this morning and score at more than just 2 runs an over.. I get that our bowlers are tired (although they didn't bowl nearly as many overs as the Aussies did), but they've had an afternoon and evening and most of this morning to rest. One thing that really annoys me with SA sides is that they are not ruthless. If Aus were in the position we were in yesterday their batsman would've scored at a healthy rate to further crush and demoralize us. Anyway, it seems like we're on our way to a 3-1 series win. Well done blommetjies! We may suck at ODI's and T20's, but test cricket is where it matters the most!

    Cricket......

Yeah they seem to be a bit flat. No surprise though after what happened during the last week. I like the idea of their new captain shaking hands with all our players before the game started. It was a nice gesture, just to clear the air a little bit. With all the rain forecast for the next 3 days we better bowl them out cheaply and enforce the follow on
