  1. i was also advised by the ppa to demand your space on the road ie don't be squeezed up against the left of the road/gutter when cycling on public roads with lots of vehicles. well , i won't take that chance i will rather be as far left as possible than stick my ass into passing traffic.
  2. riding on a road with no hard shoulder and being on the outside of the bunch would make very nervous of being sideswiped by a car. logic tells me to get to the back and as far left as possible to be safe.
  3. it's taken 11 days to be reported in the media? huh
  4. sorry wrong forum -
  5. i was sitting in yesterdays traffic jam on the way to the ppa training session.as usuual there were taxis riding down the hard shoulder but with about 750 metres to go before the turn into Killarney race track (i was driving from the Dunoon side) about 6 cars/bakkies/ with bicycles in the back jumped the queue and drove in the oncoming lane's hard shoulder, therefore missing the oncoming traffic but forcing pedestrians to take evasive action. i sat there absolutely dumbfounded. it took me another 10 minutes to arrive and i was late but still managed to join up with the training group who were into their 2nd lap.
  6. i received all the docs from our province but without a list of difintions it is dificult to decipher. i agree that category racing as opposed to age categories is the way to go.
  7. what distance did he race this weekend?
  8. every year wc road race is a parade for 100 kms with the bunch not letting the early attack (there is always one) get too far ahead. with about 100 k left , there is a flurry of attacks to weed out the weak (i suppose over the last few years this includes rsa), and this usually results in the final selection of the best riders who will then catch the break spit them out and its every man (team) for themselves. if the spanish had not missed that crucial break, then maybe thor would not have been in the sprint because they had to work very hard to breach the gap. imho the belguims showed real class, they controlled the race, Gilbert should have taken his chance in the sprint instead of a lone attack, Cadel Evans is a tough nut, the italians messed up as usual and the french (can't remember). Thor showed everone that it takes a lot of suffering and guts to win, he must have really suffered to claw his way over those climbs.
  9. you can also take the vleesbaai turnoff on the n2, it does a loop back to the n2 just before albertinia, turn ariund and retrace your steps. not sure of the distance but the road is quiet.
  10. do you have yr own club?
  11. try the guys from Bowmans Cycles in CT CBD , i believe they have a group that ride daily from central city to Hout Bay and back.
  12. just for interest sake, where in moz are you? and how did you know of the other bikes? do you have an intelligence network or were you offered the bikes?
  13. whats the latest on this road , any news?
  14. not disputing that they should of gone , just commenting on splat's twat pressing the plunger 3 minutes early, i also got caught off guard, the twat was the mayor of Cape Town Dan Plato.
  15. was it a break-in or did you leave the garage open for a few minutes? start by looking in Dunoon and all pawn shops in the area. that is some serious looking looking bike, if it was just some spur of the moment snatch then the new owner won't know what they have or what its worth. on the other hand it was an inside job (do you have a gardener, domestic or has there been any building going on around in the area) then keep tabs on gumtree and local bike shops. remember the guy that got bikejacked , the cops found the bike on the roof of a house in Dunoon a month later.
  16. twat = the mayor of CT
  17. i went thru 2 sets of 105 sti's within 3 years (return spring went). 10 years ago i bought a new frame and was able to pick up a 2nd hand campy centaur groupset for a good price. that campy group set is still going strong on my training bike meaning that i haven't had to replace any parts in over 10 years, sure the brake and gear levers are starting to rattle and i can have them replaced and serviced unlike shimano. so my advice to you is buy the bike with campy groupset. the frame is immaterial because they are all manufactured en masse in china/taiwan thus they should all be of the same standard (best is to buy new for the lifetime guarantee, you might not get this with a 2nd hand frame). personally i don't like a composite frame
  18. just a word of warning - the traffic is very heavy on T'draai and V'hok from about 6.00am.
  19. i agree , this cyclist is going to play with the other juniors if he comes back to the rsa for the national champs in october. if he does come back and i really hope he does , get down to the Bellville velodrome and witness some class. this youngster is so down to earth and he doesn't realise how good he is and fast he can be.
  20. i'm sorry to say but you are missing the point i am trying to make to Big H.... go & read his response to my 1st post where he states "it is illegal to cycle on a freeway" PERIOD. in his eagerness to belittle and show his superior knowledge he forgot to add "provided you have permission" after freeway.
  21. soooo, Big H it is NOT ILLEGAL to ride on a freeway IF YOU HAVE PERMISSION.
  22. Big H the 1st 15 k's of the argus is on a freeway , are you telling me we are taking part in a illegal activity every year? and if we are killed we won't be able to hold the organisers liable????
  23. i would investigate this route: along liesbeeck parkway towards mowbray, left onto settlers way, left onto m5 (nice big shoulder), left into Berkley rd, maitland and then left over maitland bridge. negotiate over the interchange and into Brooklyn along Koeberg rd to milnerton OR left into Paarden Eiland and then right onto the beach rd into milnerton. remember to ride defensively and assume u are invisible to the motorist. if you commute often then you will more than likely ride past the same motorists day after day and they should be expecting to see you some time on the route.
  24. some sa pro's are delusional and way too cool to wear a helmet
  25. i speak under correction but you are allowed to cycle on a national road provided there are less than 10 riders and the group is not backed up by a following vehicle. if you are a bigger party and require a back up vehicle you would need road permission from the traffic authorities thru whose area you are riding.
