What TMNP needs is not game rangers, they need security guards.
but hey, thought i'd go and see what is going there, and they posted this on friday

"The total remuneration package is a basic salary as per the Expanded Public Works Programme rates of R208.00 per day".
That's R4.4k gross a month - no accommodation, no food, no travel allowance...

3 runners (and even a marshal apparently) were mugged during the event itself
Another fantastic hub thread that's gone to ####, with personal insults, flaming and trolling.
What a shame, as this one was really useful, had helpful informative and some lekker bikeporn.
I'll leave you to it.

What paperwork do they require? Thanks.

Also have 140mm and I don't have any issues on longer rides but I am no racer. Doesn't feel too wallowy if it firm it up a bit. It's not like my previous 160mm bike.
Isn't it normal for marathon bikes to have over 100mm these days? 120mm? So 20mm diff isn't huge.
Yip, 120mm is the new 100mm for XCM (eg Matt Beers' Spez Epic Evo and Nino's Scott in the Cape Epic were both 120mm).
There are still a few 100mm bikes floating around for XCO.

I run this option because I ride in the dark.
Front light under my Garmin and rear light attached to the saddle rails.
Neat and very effective along with the Garmin connection, where you can see the battery life and get them to switch on and off when you start/finish your ride.
Highly recommended (i have used the predecessor for years).
Don't buy the cheaper bontrager lights because, as per other comments, they don't have great battery life (even if they do provide great illumination)

"Highest ever rainfall in one year was measured at Jonkershoek in the Western Cape (3 874 mm in 1950). The wettest place in South Africa is Matiwa, with an average annual rainfall of 2 004 mm (calculated over a 60-year period)."
So maybe 3m p.a., not 1.3?
You are, ofc, correct - my comment was typed from memory (Newlands is the wettest SUBURB in SA, not place). Was lazy, shoulda used google...

Since then, been on a boost dual suspension with excellent fork, carbon wheels and groupset.
I have always thought of going back to the hardtail, since it is far more fun to ride. I have been thinking of getting a boost hardtail frame, swapping my components over and keeping the dual suspension frame for stage / adventure races.
Where does one find boost hardtail frames? Only one i can find is the Trek Procalibre on their website. however, the frame is priced at the cost of the full hardtail bike 🙃
Speak to @droo at Stoke in Woodstock, Cape Town about a Banshee (they are the official importer).
Getting some serious FOMO on this thread, already

2.6x29” Asegai on the front
2.8x27.5 DHF on the rear (wanted something in 3.0 but couldn’t find stock locally at the time and wanted to just ride)
Well done, bloody good job.

The 530 has a DECENT battery.
Have look at Black Friday specials 👍
Second this - battery life is amazing.
The user interface (buttons) is, however, crappy IMHO when compared to a touch screen (DC Rainmaker and other reviewers note this for 530 and 540). Shame that the 830 & 840 are $$$

Garmin SA customer service does NOT respond to online queries AT ALL.
ALL I need is a SCREW (lost it during transit) for a brand new out-front bike mount and paying R900 for a new one is making me want to vom*
*Apologies for hijack.
Two questions - how LONG will you be riding and at WHAT SPEED?
If you are doing an all-nighter like Desert Dash or 36ONE or a 24-hour, you will need an external battery pack to see you through the night. Most bar-mounted lights with internal batteries won't last more than 3 or 4 hours at their brightest illumination.
If you are traveling at speed (faster than jogging pace), you'll need 1,000 lumens+, in my opinion, to be able to see far enough ahead in the trail / road to be safe.
My neck can't handle the extra weight of a head-mounted light, so i'd check that out beforehand and not test on race day.
Riding through the night is exhausting and fatigue can be debilitating. I was super grateful for my powerful chinese-special light (2,000 lumens + external battery mounted on frame) during the night at Desert Dash.
Lynnwood Cyclery (Spez Concept Store). I used them for many years (until 2021) and their Service Dept is top.
Shop 1a, Willow Way Shopping Centre, Cnr Lynnwood Road & Power Avenue. Pretoria 0081. ZA. phone. 012 348 3132.
If it's an older (proprietary) shock, there may be issues with parts availability (eg my 2016 Camber rear sus can't be replaced or serviced).
Is this on?
Weather permitting or regardless?
Sorry for your loss, bro.
I ride both sides of the mountain and will keep an eye out.
Please post a better pic, with detailed description (anything that's unique, eg groupset, seat, panniers...anything that'll help to identify the bike).

Can I ask that this time the lead riders for each group do a track walk or explanation of each section, best routes, risks etc so we can learn from the pros and then put it to practice?
The Conties ride was great but there was no teaching involved and the fast guys just sped away at each stage. 😅
Jonkers can be intimidating so would be cool to learn on the day. 😎🤘
Second this - some (expert?) advice would be much appreciated.

I think that's a sound approach but, IIRC, the guy who pepper sprayed bikejackers in Pta East recently got shot three times for his efforts...that's the outcome that really sucks.
