Meezo Posted April 11, 2011 Posted April 11, 2011 (edited) I use to ride without them, never needed them, then rode with them, and couldn't do without, took them off again... Going to see what happens next! Want to hear what other hubbers think Edited April 11, 2011 by Meezo
NotSoBigBen Posted April 11, 2011 Posted April 11, 2011 Don't have an opinion either way but you know the rule
Jabawakee411 Posted April 11, 2011 Posted April 11, 2011 Love them on the climbs get more contol so that not only your legs do the climbing but your arms as well
Tankman Posted April 11, 2011 Posted April 11, 2011 where is the "who cares" option, ride what you like ... like what you ride!
eraser Posted April 11, 2011 Posted April 11, 2011 I don't like the way they look. Especially on a 29er, so on my new bike I never put the old ones on for few rides and realized my hands were cramping on long rides, especially when the long rides had long climbs, eventually just bought a small/shorter set in black (inconspicuous) and best of both worlds.... Top tip - Get some Eezi Grip Silicone in the Chunky size, prices at R180 not cheap but the most comfy grips I've ever used by fffaaarrr!
intern Posted April 11, 2011 Posted April 11, 2011 I use to ride without them, never needed them, then rode with them, and couldn't do without, took them off again... Going to see what happens next! Want to hear what other hubbers think Did the same. When I had a flat bar, had them, now with a riser, don't. And that's only cause I got tired of replacing carbon handlebars, not because I was worried about some apocryphal aesthetic. Don't miss them, but loved them when I had them.
29er FAN Posted April 11, 2011 Posted April 11, 2011 I develop bad pins and needles in my hands when riding to the point where I struggle to change gear and break.Bar ends is the only thing that helps (own 8 pairs of gloves already... ) as I can move and change the pressure points, by changing my grip onto the bar ends - I'm a HUGE must have!
udxcob Posted April 11, 2011 Posted April 11, 2011 essential, get very tired of having my hands in one place
Squier Posted April 12, 2011 Posted April 12, 2011 Can't do without! I need to be able to change my hand position.
TNT1 Posted April 12, 2011 Posted April 12, 2011 you know the rule Yeah, the rule that states: Tell the pretentious mtb police to sod off. Ride what you like, and what works for you. My favorite rule.
scotty Posted April 12, 2011 Posted April 12, 2011 Used to have them on my previous MTB, not on my current one and cant say i miss them.
gummibear Posted April 12, 2011 Posted April 12, 2011 and couldn't do without, took them off again... Going to see what happens next! If they work for you,why worry what anyone else thinks. It's your bike and you should be comfy on it.
AndreZA Posted April 12, 2011 Posted April 12, 2011 It's interesting to read about people's riding styles. It sounds like people use it when they climb and when they are hammering on flats. The past weekend I realised that I actually move my hands in closer and hold on to the brake lever clamps when I do either of those.

I use mine on the short steep climbs and i also find i move my hands closer to the stem on the flats.
Andrew_ew Posted April 12, 2011 Posted April 12, 2011 I was bold & broke the rule and had them when I had a riser bar - but found that the riser bars were slowing me down on forest single track & the bar ends made them feel even more like a barn door. Took them off, put on a kcnc flat bar, no bar ends now, don't miss them at all. I think - just my own personal opinion, that they do look cool on whatever bars and if they work for you then that is great - btw i was told by a former pro cyclist that she vould not climb properly without them as they gave her better leverage. Not been my experience, but then we are all different so what works for one may not work for the next.
