PappaBear Posted April 14, 2011 Posted April 14, 2011 Hi all I've been wondering about this for some time.... which are best? All things equal offcourse... meaning: comparing apples with apples. eg: Top shimano vs Top avid vs Top magura Not going to compare XTR brakes with Juicy 3.0 Please comment as well.... I had Juicy on my previous bike, seemed to fade.... not that potent stopping power which I experienced with Magura (WOW!!!!)
Cycle Factory Posted April 14, 2011 Posted April 14, 2011 Formula brakes by a long shot. In every category they a model they are they class-leaders My link
MTB MAN Posted April 14, 2011 Posted April 14, 2011 In my opinion the Hope brakes the best disc brakes I have ridden anyone riding Hopes can tell you the exact same thing...
Cycle Factory Posted April 14, 2011 Posted April 14, 2011 (edited) Formula The One Formula Oro K24 Formula R1 Edited April 14, 2011 by Cycle Factory Store
DMD 1 Posted April 14, 2011 Posted April 14, 2011 I have Hope tech X2. No more to be said. Oh well a little teaser then: I have used them for the past 18 months. Never had to bleed them and they still work brilliantly like the day I bought them. I have used generic pads but the original hope pads seem to last longer. The hope brake sets are a bit pricey but well worth every penny. Oh and the hope system is super sexy to look at. Hope, hope, hope ,hope - you get the message.
MTB MAN Posted April 14, 2011 Posted April 14, 2011 My bud uses EBC pads said they pretty good you should try them...
MTBer wannabee Posted April 14, 2011 Posted April 14, 2011 i did not like my juicys either. I have not tested enough to comment which is best, I am now happy with my shimano
Vinnydabutcher Posted April 14, 2011 Posted April 14, 2011 Shimano XT was the best I ever had. Rated1. Shimano XT2. Formula R13. Avid Juicy ultimate - hated these XT`s felt better than the R1`s - not sure why - but I am sure most people will disagree with me on this but faced with a choice, XT please! Very keen to try Hope! X2 for Xmas!
Skott5 Posted April 14, 2011 Posted April 14, 2011 I have Hope Mono Mini's on my race bike and can't say I've been impressed with them. Looks wise they are killer, but performance wise dissapointing. I know the X2's are in a different league but from what I hear Formula is the way to go.
Capricorn Posted April 14, 2011 Posted April 14, 2011 the avid option is misleading, as it comprises juicys, elixirs and codes. I presume the latter doesnt count for XC purposes, but of the former two..elixir's win hands down. Brilliant brakes.
Iwan Kemp Posted April 14, 2011 Posted April 14, 2011 (edited) Formula. Best for modulation, feel, setup, weight and heat dissipation. Then Avid Elixir, Hope, Avid Juicy, Some Maguras, Crashing into a tree and then Shimano Edited April 14, 2011 by The Crow ScottCM and Keithc 2
Spark Posted April 14, 2011 Posted April 14, 2011 Avid XX is the worst by far. Replaced mine with Hope before Epic. Very satisfied
kosmonooit Posted April 14, 2011 Posted April 14, 2011 'Best' needs a bit of further defining maybe? weight performanceprice (local or import)ease of maintenancerigidityadjustabilitylast but not least, looks Hope meets most of the above for me (bar the price and weight). Thing I really like about them is all the parts are machined and not die-cast, and the finish is amazing. Design is great as well. All parts are reusable (like the olives) and you can get parts from CRC which for me is NB in the long term. There is a local agent but I got mine in from CRC and UkBikeStore I've had Hope Moni Mini's almost 10 years now on hardtail mtb now pavement warrior, overhauled them once, still happy with them. Been through one set of rotors. Had the more beefy M4's on my vintage Scalpel 2000 over the last year, they have performed very well, on the likes of the long and exciting downhills of Barberton, Sabie, Giants Castle. Today just got in a 'limited edition' set of M4's plus some big rotors for my full travel am Prophet I am building. Their floating rotors are a good idea I think. http://www.hopetech.com/webtop/modules/_repository/images/HOPE-TECH-Black-Series-028726(1).jpg
Tankman Posted April 14, 2011 Posted April 14, 2011 Then Avid Elixir, Hope, Avid Juicy, Some Maguras, Crashing into a tree and then Shimano
