DL method came from a paper published in 1998. They claimed to have got the idea from the 22 off 1 cricket final in 1992*.

A Rondebosch schoolboy did a maths project on the issue in 1992, his teacher escalated it to the higher powers. Dr. Ali Bacher got it used for the B&H night cricket in the next season. It had it's limitations (he was std8, not a p.hd in statistics!) but he never got the full credit for the idea. I must go alter their wikipedia page in revenge now.

 

 

ps. according to DLS we still would have lost that game by 2 runs!
