I am not a patriotic Saffa by any means. Moved to ZA when 11 years old in ‘76 and did not have a huge grasp of Afrikaans for a number of years. Afrikaans is essentially my 4th language , but I digress.

I enjoy rugby, generally support England as that is where I live but I go to twickenham now and again and went on Saturday to watch the boks play Argentina. Man oh man, what a vibe and what a Lekker joyous crowd before the game. Sad to see so many ex saffas here but is what it is.

Did get a little lump in throat when the Die stem part of anthem started and ppl were in full voice, absolutely stunning moment. Realised I had never really looked into the lyrics of Die Stem.

spent some time on it yesterday, what incredibly awesome lyrics it actually is. Pity it’s relegated to the scrap heap of history for the most part.

...................Die stem.................

Originally a poem by CJ Langenhoven, who was an absolute master of words, a lawyer, philosopher, parlaimentarian, writer, poet, alcoholic and a few more interesting and colourful things..........he once said in parlaiment that "half of this house are asses".........was told by the speaker to retract.......and then said that "half of this house are NOT asses"!

Sounds like a Churchill kind of response. Brilliant.

I always notice how the volume increases as the crowd get to the Afrikaans part of die stem, no matter where in the world they are, Twickenham this last weekend was an excellent example of this.

Exactly that. And I get it with the older folks like myself but even the youngsters give it a full go for the Afrikaans lyrics.

Really enjoyed the day, it was superb and lovely wife came out too, met up with loads of mates and just had a champagne day. ( but drank beer).
