He/She gets an Olympic certificate which you get for first eight and is actually valued quite highky amongst athletes, you obviously never made it to the olympics else you would have known.

Obviously I didnt and I am not taking anything away from the guys that did make it to the Olympics.

Good on them, they competed at the top against the best in the world.

But who remembers the guy that was 4th, 3rd, or even 2nd?

Do you remember who came 4th at this years Argus, 94.7, Comrades, Epic, SA’s? Nope and no one cares!

An athlete at the Olympics deserve some type of recognition but how can rider 348 at Moerlandspan's 16km MTB funride expect the same recognition, if only the top 3 positions in the world really matters and gets recognized?

I WANT my medal !!! Shoe boxes got to small to keep them in so I hang them all in the bike room now . Got 27 Babaas medals and most looks the same but I keep them all .

To the serious riders on The Hub with shoe boxes full of medals, they appear to be a waste of time. My opinion is that medals are a great investment into the future of our sport. Giving a kid a medal in his first ride brings them back for more. The 0-20 medal group is where we grow the sport.

Was this at the Hex on Saturday in De Doorns? I am the one that actually did turn around. :( Wondered about him. Glad he made it and did not turn around. :D

Why on earth do you turn around?? Its like one of the nicest events, yes there is some climbs...but it's fun....come now man, you can do it!

Yes it was. He finished 30min before the cut off. He now call me every hour to ask something about mountain biking. Another one hooked

"Why on earth did you do the short route?? Its like one of the easiest events ...."

I'd only expect a medal if I got a podium finish, other wise I might as well buy one.

i'm so over medals. they are an extra expense for the race organisers and most just end up in the bottom of some drawer. chucked most of them out last year, and chucked out a 3rd place yesterday [i did put it into the recyling bin, so maybe something good will come from it]

I quite liked those embroidered badges from before god invented bullets.

I still have a Magoebas Challenge one (which almost killed me)and the Star 100 which I keep because we rode in a goddam sleet and hail storm and they were milestones in my road cycling.

Other than that the Sabie coaster is cool that I use for my glass of wine and the Magoebas Classic chunk of rock has its uses

I disagree, a medal for the masses is meant as a memento of the event, you do not have to podium to get a memento as some are saying, a medal is a nice rememberance for the fun runner / rider and costs the organiser very little.

I have long been involved with organisation of events in the running world and a few bike races, believe me if they withheld the medals there would be a riot.

People want them to remember the event by, yes a T-Shirt would be nice, but if you can source us a T-Shirt, printed with our logo / race / date etc on it for less than 10 bucks, let me know, theres many who will buy them.

I too have hundreds of medals laying around, including a few Comrades, Two Oceans, Jock tours, London Marathon, New York Marathon and, and, and, no matter, I still enjoy getting one at the event, its a "thank you" from the organisers for participating in our event, and I would not be impressed if I didnt get a medal - Oh, and I have never stood on the podium.

One of my kids did her first 5km fun ride last weekend. And she received a medal at the end. That medal hung around her neck for the whole day. And accompanied her to school the next. That medal will encourage her to go back for another and another.

I would love to join in on the ubercool crowd and state that I only keep Epic podium medals and such, but only a very few of the hubbers make regular podium visits.

The rest of us get a podium from time to time in the smaller races. I still take the medal, even if it lands up in a box somewhere. I even had to take the one for the 5km ride with my daughter(she insisted)

If a medal encourages people to get off their backsides and ride/run/walk, it has to be a good thing.

At the time it seamed quite serious .. I just could not let my HR below 170-180.That is very high for me. 157 is working rate. I had to stop about 4 times on that first hill to gasp for air. Something was not exactly right ..... and I decided to call it a day and go home before "they" have to take me. Even going downhill I had a HR of 150.

Now please ... all the leave-your-HR-monitor-at-home-prophets I prefer to ride with one. Having said that.... I really wondered later whether I just should have waited a few minutes before turning around. Especially as the route really was not difficult up to that stage.

And that is why I did not give him a change to turn around with me ....he would have wondered for ever...

PS . You are a good friend riding with on his first race :)

Reading though all the responses , it actually confirms a statement I have made on a race advertising that only the first 1000 finishers get medals.

That is so wrong. It the last 1000 that actually needs the medals as for them it is a true accomplishment. The top finishers have so many medals already that it is a nuisance ...and as someone else explained to me, its about the time not the medal.

Except podium medals - as that anyone wants.

When we started the Vori-Berg MTB races we decided to break with the tradition of a medal.

The fist few races we handed out a pair of Vori-Berg branded socks, we then moved onto water bottles.

The wheel has now turned once again and we had various requests asking if we could provide a medal.

The result is that we now offer a medal or water bottle to all finishers.

I also have a box full of medals that i collected over the years.

The company that provides our medals also had the contract to provide the medals for all the riders of the Tour De France 2010. I was able to get my hands on one of these and is being well used as a paper weight as it is quite heavy.

Will try an post some pics
