I have R10 000 to spend on a hardtail mountain bike. Is it better to find a bargain used bike, or to go new. For R10 000 can one buy a decent new mountain bike? What are the options? I am young and don't require full sus.I plan on doing events like Karoo 2 coast, Oyster fest 75k mtb race.

For 10k you'll get a very reasonable hardtail. Should come with SLX gruppo and at least a Recon front fork, sometimes might be a Tora though.

In terms of used bikes though, you'll get a LOT more for your 10 gees than what you would get for the same amount if you bought new.

For new, best value is generally Silverback or Merida, but there are others that will fit your price very well. Just compare the parts that they all come with, and buy one that YOU feel is right for YOU.

Hi Chris.

These are two rad bikes for that kind of money. I have the Ventura and it is really a awsome bike!

I had a Silverback Spectra 2011, it was a great bike, good components for the money with 10 speed SLX. I sold it and bought a road bike but I regret selling it now, I would still like to do some MTB rides

Sjoe that Ventura is excellent value for 6,k !

Wouldn't mind one to train on, even cheaper than my road bike I use for training :)

Any idea if the XXL will be up to the challenge of a 2,1m guy that weighs 140kg ?

I have a buddy that I want to get into mtb and his current bike is too small and isn't holding under the weight, allready broken the left crank arm off

My question is exactly the same.Saw a cannondale SL 2 for R 8000-00 at Tour de Frans.R 500-00 goodies thrown in.

SLX XT.Looking to start out in MTB, I'm not too bothered with the tech stuff.(My roadbike is a pretty basic Raleigh RC 3000 that has served me well for six years)

So many models and opinions to compare can be quite daunting.

for 10k, i'd go for the Silverback Spectra 2011. SLX/XT. Recon gold fork.

Beautiful bike!

Dude, don't get a silverback. Its got components but a suck frame.

If you want to win a race go with the giant xtc 2, merida matts lite 1000 or scott scale 70 or mabye even the 60. The giant is my favourite and is a really godd looking bike and their service is awsome.

http://www.scott-sports.com/us_en/product/10024/55474/217947 (has nice stickers and geometry like the giant but has a rockshox tora)

Here is a better picture of the giant: http://bicyclingaustralia.com/classifieds/images/A/d-IYV2891503IUJ.jpg
