Cleaning with paraffin

 HI all

the guys at the bike shop said that i could clean my whole bike with paraffin, shock, frame , chain etc. I have a basic HT with deore parts. Should i clean with paraffin or not.

No need to go that extreme. Just do the cassette, derailleurs and crank blades. The rest of the bike you use car shampoo or even, bit my tongue, sunlight liquid.

Agreed, just do the blades, chain and casette. I clean my bike with Sunlight, then give it a nice rubdown with Mr Min. Makes ir look all shiny and new!

Sunlight is a degreaser . Check their add on TV . Stay clear of BB , Hubs etc with that stuff . But I also use it smileys/smiley5.gif

I use Cleangreen on the cassettes and frame to clean it and some spray on stuff to make it shine afterwoodssmileys/smiley4.gif

IMO NO!

Paraffin has reasonable cleaning, lubrication and excellent penetrant properties. As a result it will get into the smallest space and any surface coming in contact with it will exhibit a slightly oily residue , which in turn will attract dust if not cleaned off properly.

Not ideal for painted surfaces, non metallic material or repeated contact with human beings.

Would not recommend it to be used to clean the chain if you use a dry or wax chain type lube.

I use prepsol, but heard it my dry out the parts. So then I just wax it!

I use paraffin to clean the cassette, derailleurs and chain. Works well!

Frame I use McGreggors shampoo... and then after wards I use a touch of turps on the brake levers, cranks and brake calipers just to give them that nice shine... before I used dog shampoo and smelling like wet dog for 100km's + did not work to well...  umm that was just a joke?

Agree with Jason.  Logically you use paraffin to degrease your chain, etc.  If you should use it on a shock, etc and some of it gets past the shock seals you'll be stuffed!!!

 

I use engine degreaser for my MTB chain and one of those rolling thingys for my road bikes.  Rest of the bike I use Sunlight Liq and afterwards some Mr Min.

So after cleaning your chain with paraffin, do you just wipe it clean with a rag or do you have to rinse it with water and then dry with a rag? Just wondering if after cleaning with a degreaser or paraffin and some of it stays in the chain will it not displace the lube afterwards.
