Bike Insurance

Just thought I'd update my last post here. Logged a claim for my wife's bike, which was insured under Discovery Insure. Gave them the case number, a brief description of events (diewe came in and scaled bike, which was locked with 12mm braided steel cabling) and then gave them a replacement quote from an LBS. Was paid out 2 days later, minus the excess. No hassles. Very easy and pain free.

good to hear. I've got my car insured through them and was debating between insuring my bike with Discovery or Cyclesure.

Who underwrites discovery ST side? What are their premiums like?

As far as I know Discovery does not insure bicycles in timed events (races)

They also do not cover motorcycles for track days and they do not insure modified cars. 3 good reasons why my broker couldn't talk me into moving my insurance.

Any idea of an insurance company willing to just insure your bikes, and not wanting you to sign up with basically everything you want insured?

Little bit off topic but I am having trouble with Alexander Forbes with my stolen superbike. I specified R36000.00 extras, now that it has been stolen they say I removed R25000.00 standard Honda parts and added R35000.00 aftermarket parts so they only owe me R10000.00

I suspect they would handle bicycle upgrades the same way in the event of a claim.

Insurance loopholes .... they will always find them to get out a payment

They a money making business, having to do payouts, eat into bottom line, they'd do anything to avoid it.

I am revaluing and re insuring my bicycle, it was insured as a standard bicycle with most parts upgraded so am afraid they would do the same in event of a claim so I got pricing on a custom build bike with the same specs, funny enough, the value is now R60K instead of R55k - separate parts are more expensive..

If you are going to insure your bike, the best thing you can do is to get a valuation from your LBS on their letterhead, detailing the make and model, as well as any upgrades/accessories fitted to the bike. The more proof of ownership you can have in the event of a claim the better.
