Andy its simple, do a 10 hour iron man and carry banana s muffins energy bars ??? Not a chance, there is only one thing u need for racing its called carbohydrates and that equates to energy. I can't carry 10 bananas with me in calorie terms so I use very convenient fuel for my body. Earlier a guy mentioned a muffin, come on that would kill my digestive system, there is something called gastric emptying rate ie: digest and absorb a muffin ain't going to do the trick unless I am doing a 4 hour 94.7 or 17 hour ironman. I need fuel to be convenient and as simple as possible, that's why energy products exist, I am extreme when it comes to diet training and racing I am meticulous in what I consume, but even in the form of an energy product I keep

It as simple and as natural as possible, no unnecessary additives no nonsense simple. I need to take in a certain amount of calories every hour and my digestive system needs to cope its not so simple shoving down solid food especially when u r performing at a high intensity. So I don't see the conflict in my statement saying keep

It as natural or simple as possible.

Cool. The only thing is that a calorie isn't a calorie. Have you ever heard of GI? And you don't only need carbs, but also fat and protein, which in the end all equals energy, just in different forms. Personally I don't think a coke can make you bonk. It's like saying the last slice of bread you ate makes you fat.

For our Cape Town league races I only use/have time for one bottle of Energade and one banana. For DC I have to eat solid foods like peanutbutter samis, patatoes, etc. But I don't do any Ironmans - that is lots of respect for you!

This topic is a bit complex, but isn't electrolytes just salt in water?

From Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electrolytes

"Electrolyte solutions are normally formed when a salt is placed into a solvent such as water and the individual components dissociate due to the thermodynamic interactions between solvent and solute molecules, in a process called solvation."

I still have a project where I want to make my own "Energade"... or call it "Andygade". Fructose, salt and water. What else do I need?

Andy, I am a nutritionist by profession I understand GI extremely well, I deal with a lot of elite athletes here and abroad around nutrition, whether daily racing or training and I get excellent results ;-)

One more thing to dispel here, fats u don't need u r carrying

More than enough for fuel , protein is a debate in its

Own but it ain't gonna fuel u that's for sure at least not in any

Cycle races here, for recovery that's a different story altogether, protein has a place but not in a one day cycle

Event.

Still. A lot of your comments here seem baseless opinion...

I ride on one bottle water and the other water bottle half coke, half water. On a hot day I take coke at the water points. I find the suger in the coke help the body, no negative effects. Think you need to take in more solid foon before the race and during the race. Bananas are GREAT. With sum chewies like super c or jelly babies. Voomas work as well. But you need solid food. I also skippe the food and went on shakes before the race, did not work. And some practice. One's body can only take so much, train for more and you will recieve more.

On Saterday I took a Monster Energy before the fun ride...I was dead after 20km! But then again I did party the previous night...never again!

I had a red bull energy shot before a 1k rowing time trial on the ergometer...

Nearly vomited after 300m, was horrible.

For riding I usually, if its a short ride just ride with water, races I take one bottle octane or whatever is in the house.

Long races water and some other thing and some gu's and a powerbar.

lol anything like monster / redbull is going to mess you up, just because they sponsor extreme sports doesnt mean its a good idea to partake.

More interested in finding out where he got the cherry coke.

A few SPAR stores import American products now too.

 After reading some of the comments here, you have my permission to send the following tip to that cycling magazine's Riders Tips:

Never take nutritional advice from anyone that stops at any waterpoints during a race, they have clearly not figured it out yet! :D

Coke should only be used as a mixer. With double brandy. Preferably kwv 5 year old.

And consumed during the last 30 mins of a cycle race.

Hold your line, ek sé!!

Which points exactly seem baseless?

Well, maybe not baseless, but you wont get very far if you keep trying to force a particular brand down our throats.

Your apparent vested interest in 23IG is very off-putting, and makes it pretty hard to see anything else you might be saying.

TNT I understand where u r

Coming from but in all honesty not forcing it down your throat, a lot of my athletes have other supplement sponsors I never try to change their supplements I work only with their nutrition. I write articles for magazines some around nutrition I totally distance myself from any product related pitches etc because it provides a lak of credibility, I also travel a lot around the country doing talks on nutrition whether to MTB Clubs, Schools etc there is no product pushing at all I keep my distance totally as I don't believe it's credible from a professional standpoint. If u look at the product mentions I am only replying to a comment made about the product because I know it intimately well, so either trying to assist or explain I don't need to push it, everyone needs to find what will work for them. Hope this clarifies my position and if u guys need any nutrition assistance I am here to help and in a product agnostic way always :-) all the best M
