Hi again,

I'm not sure why I am asking this as I have seen a lot of comments on here about 2nd hand vs new already but let me give it a go with regard to specific bikes :)

The air fork on the Silverback is a definite advantage. It depends what condition the bike is in but out of the two I'd go for the Silverback - should be a more enjoyable bike to ride.

This is why chatting is so useful! When looking at the spec I totally missed the fact that the Silverback had an air shock. Thanks :)

The Deore components are obviously superior to the Alivio too but as stated it always depends on condition.

Hi, thanks. Interestingly I popped into Concept Cyclery today and they put me on an XL Titan Sport and said it was a good fit. The Titan XL is a 21.5". It seems I am the height that sits on the cusp and there are different opinions regarding what is the best fit for me. Personally, after having ridden a M for so long, they both feel good! There was only about 2 inches free when I stood over the XL. I've heard some people advising a little more than this.

I'm personally thinking that for the extra R130 I should go for the Elite due to the better components. But it is an XL. Damn, this is confusing. Also concerns me that it may be more difficult to sell an XL later on whereas L seems to be more common and desired.

I have seen talk elsewhere that Titan do not have a website but it appears they now do. Strangely enough it doesn't seem to show up on Google when searching for Titan. The site is : http://titanracingbikes.com

Chap. If you are talking Concept Waterfall, take their advice. They know what they are on about. Ask them to put it on the setup rollers. Ride it around. They had some nice spec bikes there the other day. They are Merida stable. Good brand.

Edit: An when you ride out - with your Helmut, ask them to point you in the direction of the 'local' trail, just up the road. :D

An entry level bike that's only a few months old, the guy either loves the sport and rode it to death and is now upgrading, or didn't get in to it and maybe only rode it a few times. You may be lucky and pick something up that's hardly been used. The resale on bikes is terrible even if it has only a couple of hundred kilometers on it. If you have a limited budget then with a bit of patience secondhand is a good option.

R4k new will get you a very low end option, but 2nd hand are often good as new, and will go 50% price of the new, but you need to know what you are getting.'Upgrading' costs fortune.

Also remember lots of good deals coming up on used 26" mtb bikss as others follow the flock to 29'ers, however the 29'ers certainly seem to suit the taller cyclists (like the champ Kulhavi)

BS. Mighty Mouse wins on a 29er. He's not exactly tall.

The Oracle has spoken!

From my eyes the proportions look more appropriate. Personally I don't like the aesthetics of the big wheels but that's me, also happy to own vintage 2nd hand 26'ers with Al frames, and put the money into good groupset, shox, forks and wheels.

Do youself a favour and pop into Leigh's cycle Center at the Pavillion and ask about the new Axis Bikes range, there is a lot of hoo ha on Twitter at the moment for the brand, new no nonsense lower cost bikes, or follow @TheOldCootBiker on Twitter and ask him (Brandon Els) directly, he owns Probike the agents for Scott and Axis Bikes, or ask @Mr_Tread (Trad Mag Editor/Owner) for some feedback, he has just tested an Axis Bikes, bike, who knows, might be right up your alley or www.probike.co.za

My 2C However: Buy second hand, from a Hubber, you will get much, much better value for money

Look here for example: https://www.bikehub.co.za/classifieds/14799-giant-talon-29er-2011/ or https://www.bikehub.co.za/classifieds/14681-scott-spark-60-2011-xl/ or https://www.bikehub.co.za/classifieds/14552-cannodale-sl-4-large-with-xt-and-slx/

All seriously much better value for money, better specs by a huge margin when compared to new.

If I were you, dude, I'd definitely go 2nd hand. No doubt about it... Far better value, and you;ll get far more enjoyment out of a higher specced 2nd hand bike that has better components. One thing to remember as well: An abused bike is almost always just a simple service away from being awesome again... you do get the exceptions, but the guys looking to sell at the "bottom end" are almost always looking at upgrading because they're loving the sport.

Welcome to the Hub, btw...

Yip, it was that one. Spoke to Duane who assisted with the setup and advise and then I just took a small spin around the car park to get a feel. Kudos to them as they were exceptionally helpful.

The seller claims around 600km ridden and the reason for the sale is that they are looking to go full suspension. I hear you regarding waiting and a bargain will come along but equally so the money starts burning holes in your pocket about you just want a new bike ASAP! :)

I hear you. I was turned off by the 2nd option though as it does not give you the quick fix of walking into a shop and walking out with a bike. It involves patience. Like asking a kid to only unwrap his Christmas presents at dinner time! However, you can get better value if you are patient. The only reason I was considering new is because it was a special offer on a 2011 bike because the new 2012 bikes have been released, so also a bargain.

Thanks, will do and will also do some online research. I had not heard of that brand yet.

Those are rather reassuring words regarding the service. And true too. Unless there is major physical damage a service should usually fix things up.

And thank you.

The only problem now is that all the 2nd hand bikes that appeal to me are all in Joburg or CT so even more patience required! ha ha

So I presume from the comments that there is no particular bias on here towards either Titan or Silverback?

forgot to mention, my dad bought a 2011 merida matts sub 60, with deore components and XT rear derailer for my mom, brand new, with some extras as well for R5500 at saleys cycles(know they have a few branches)...so there are older models in the shops for good prices too...

not too sure about this, but a guy at the local bike shop once mentioned something that sealed bearings are easier too service too(on the silverback)...
