Stop the meaningless medals! Please donate the money at the end of the Race.

I'm not going to read through 10 pages, but my opinion: have an option when you enter to either receive a medal at the end or the organiser should donate the medal's worth to charity.

Personally I don't want all the medals anymore. And on that point - anybody want my funride medals?

If you want to get clever, please read my OP properly. No mention made of meaningless races. I enjoy every event I enter.

Rather than make a half arsed effort with a medal, give me something practical or better made to remember the race by.

Just screwing with you. anyway, something practival, yes you do get those, but they cost money, like everything else, you pay R10 a medal, for somple mugs with a logo(depending on the size) R32, for those nice stainless steel cups we handed out at the Bekker Bundu bash something similar. So, if you have been involved in organising an event, you'd know that it isn't difficult. do you hike the price to make such gifts avaialbel, noone enters, and there is a 100 page thread on the hub that the race is too ezxpensinge. So we're between a rock and a hard place, and go for the cheaper option to make the race afforable. (Note , this is my viewpoint and not necessarily the race orgs, might just be that they'll agree on this)

If races just stopped handing out medals , eventually guys would stop complaining about no medals and still be proud of themselves for finishing.

But, this is the kind of subject where you will always have 3 groups: "Need a medal", "Don't need a medal" and "Don't care whether I do or don't get a medal".

Most riders seem to expect the medal (for 376th place) ,so give him his medal, but make it different to the others. Achieve a certain time and you get a gold medal. Take longer and you get a Silver medal. Take the longest (376th place out of 400) and you get a Bronze medal. At least then there is some motivation to reach the next tier and get the scarcer medal. And don't bring category into it, all based on Time.

, so, if you don't like medals, don't take it. We'll keep it for next year.

Yes, please, we always run out.

Funny, the real racers, the "pro's" and A cat guys, and the racing chickies, never take medals from us. Weird, huh?

Funny - but I like my medal - and I am not even a A racer - this is so valueble to me please do not destroy my only motivation for entering races. If you don't want the medal, don't take one - if you have a issue with medals go and tell someone who care.

I like receiving medals :) i purchase every photos and keep my medals in a safe spot.

My dad did the comrades and a few "fun races" and I recall him giving me one of his medals, I was over the moon and so proud of it. Showed my friends at my school.

So people who don't want, don't take and go give money to a local charity or whatever fluffs your feathers.

Yes, I'm all for supporting a good cause but sometimes nice to have lil things for yourself as a "reward" and memories/tokens to share with my future lil mofo's....

Only because they take themselves too seriously.

Like another post says, the medals themselves are becoming more generic and simplified. Some of them are just a hunk of metal with the name of the race, not even a year and the ribbon comes undone. When I get those I think to myself, Why bother?

My Epic medal at least looks like a quality piece of workmanship (it better be, considering the cost to take part). My medal for the Apple Blossom race in Grabouw is just a vague Apple shape with some letters stamped into it. Looks cheap and nasty.

Rather than make a half arsed effort with a medal, give me something practical or better made to remember the race by.

For those who say the novices or the kids are stoked to get a medal for their efforts, I still think a lekker embroidered badge which you sew on to your tracksuit jacket, Camelbak or favourite pre- or post- race jacket is the perfect memento to remember your achievement by. A Camelbak or jacket plasterded full of badges is the coolest thing and you can wear it and show off your achievement at the same time. Perfect.

You think that.

Personally I don't.

I want my tracksuit tops looking clean, not with badges sewn all over it.

And this is the problem, there are too many opinions, and so there has to be a generalisation.

Currently it's take a medal if you want it.
