Ok, chances are I probably have no idea what I'm talking about and missed a headline explaining what I'm about to rant about. If that's the case I'll bow out gracefully. :whistling:

As far as I understood, Zille and Fikile Mbalula were going to ride The Argus. I, for one, expected them to, well.... RIDE the Argus.

I saw an interview with Zille on the start line on TV, and she looked super cheerful and good to go. I didn't see Fikile before the race. So I try to look for Helen's results, no results found. Then I look for Mbalula's results, and he did a 4:32 odd, pretty good time. But wait... he got onto a tandem with Andrew Mclean at the bottom of Edinburgh Drive... And I think Helen did the same. I also heard somewhere she suddenly got a dodgy stomach as well...? Obviously, this was pre-planned, the getting onto tandems bit. Like in my opening sentence, if I missed the newsletter on that forgive me.

What rubs me the wrong way is how they are all over TV and catching the shine if they actually have no intention of riding more than 10km on their own? Yeah I know finishing the Argus requires someone a tad fitter than Joe Public, but then don't flash your pearly whites all over SABC if you actually planned on getting off at the foot of the first proper hill.

Rant off. :whistling:

sort of agree, i think it was a late idea from their side and they hadn't really trained. it's a start, but they shouldn't claim it if their not doing it the 'matt damon' way. assume they must have piloted themselves down hospital bend then alone!

saw the startline interview with fikile this morning, someone should explain the difference between 'drug free sport' and 'free drugs sport' to him!

That's politicians for you - good example of window dressing for image / PR reasons. Often never what they seem. Will project a specific image because that's what serves their interest.

Get thr press there for pics for them on bikes because ' its green' meanwhile they do not do the distance.

Godzille started training a few months ago and there was never any intention of her riding the whole Argus. It was a well known fact that she would be switching to a tandem. I must admit I was surprised when I heard earlier that week that Fikile Mbalula would be riding, but again it was no secret he would be switching to a tandem after the PR send off.

So no conspiracies there, I'm afraid.

Would you have preferred them to have done the whole distance is Mokonyane's brand new R1.3M+ G class Merc?

They were upfront from the start about their plans, its not like they decided halfway through the race to abandon it for the tandem's. I wonder how Andrew and i believe Jerome Swart (Helen Zille) got to the switch over point.

Probably met them on their second lap... ;)

Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

So what ...

Its just jumping on the populist band wagon which make me painfully wince .. and the big issue for most cyclists is .. SAFETY. Both in terms of dangers on the road form other vehicles and security.

Are these politicians ever on their bikes where there is not a camera around?

There was a pic of going up chappies in the newspaper so unsure about the top of edinburgh drive. Steve from Embark has been training her three times a week for 6 months so im sure she completed after doing 60-70 training sessions - surely?

Either way she must be one of the most visible, accessible politicians out there.
