My suggestion would be a Niner, Santa Cruz or Cube (something cult'y).Rig it as best you can, and with a 50k budget, that will be GOOD!!! Like this we can choose from rims, spokes, hubs, chain, derailleur cables, BB, fork, etc... Should be a killer bike!!!

If he is already a hardcore mountain biker, and still don't know what to get, I also suggest an entry level bike. Well said my man. Well said!

Also wondering if he is planning to race A group, since us normal folk that arent A seeded dont have much use for 50k HT, A 50k Dually is for us B and C group funriders
