Kremetart stage race 2008, i donated blood the wed before the race, felt flat from the 1st pedal stroke and by the 1st stage i could already feel my legs cramping. The 3rd stage they had to physically pull the bike out from under me plus i only had a few minutes to recover and i did not get to refill my empty bottles before the 4th stage started. Wobbled over the finish and collapsed against a wall exhausted like iv'e never been before, legs completely locked with cramps. Took a good few hours before i was able to move.

Wow that's 728m ascent in 2.8km! And I assume it's MTB - what race was this? Did you ride all the way up the hill?

Sani Transfrontier the year they decided to start from the Auction Yard... We went to do the 40km and realised that the 40km just became a 70km. No point going all that way to turn at the border post... Nearly 8 hours in the saddle living on over ripe bananas and water (Didn't take enough food as I wasn't expecting to be out that long) Gave new meaning to the word Bonk. Cramped all the way to the top. We were followed home by the sweep vehicle. Kept on looking back at that bakkie (Like the "spare" vehicle in the Top Gear Specials) but I wasn't going to get a lift back. By the time we got back to the start, the tents and the PA were packed away and there was one person waiting for us with a laptop to record our time. No medal and no drink. Just the satisfaction of knowing that you finished under your own steam. Was a k@k day though.

Recent Tour de PPA. Did the long ride. Felt good the morning, didn't have much miles in my legs. Went good from the start and flew up Hells. Going past Paarl the heat went up and up. Made sure I had enough fluids but big mistake didn't stop to fill up at water point before 20kms. Had a bottle still and thought I would be ok. Didn't realise that was last water stop, ended up cramping after that and ran out of water and cruised into finish only to have to drag my sorry ass up the road through neutral zone back to farmstall. I have never climbed off my bike before, bonked or cramped up before. Now I know what it feels like to hit the wall. Eina!

Tour de Tuli.

Bought a MTB three months before and my amateur training program (spinning) was interrupted completely by injuries and flu.

Close second: 2010 MTN: van Galens when they ran out of water and the thermometer said 40 degrees+.

First MTB race was the Lourensford 35km where you climb for 25km's, have 5k's worth of flattish sections and 5k's worth of downhills. Was quite rough. What didn't help was the ghost-shifting de to the wrong Aligator outers fitted by non-LBS. And it rained. The whole time. Which I don't mind. But ghost-shift + 25km climb + rain wasn't fun.

Least best road race was my first Tour de Cap 120km. Wind was HOWLING and there were veld fires all over the show.
