Last night, I parked my car on the pavement outside my house, behind a tree. A cyclist came past, lost control of his bike, hit the tree and bounced into my car. The pictures are not too clear as it was taken early evening with my phone, but look at the damage to the tree and my car. The boot is also bent inwards and does not open properly. He was pretty banged up, but I cannot believe a person on a bike can do so much damage.

Had he tried that on a 1980's Skyline (or any pre-90's car), things would have been different!

The Skyline would've been squashed up to the back seat. Only car that if you jacked up the car change a flat tyre, the back windscreen used to pop out  - that's how soft and flexible the bodywork was (on the coupe version anyway).

a bakkie came the wrong way on a 1 way street and hit my brother head on, i cant believe what damage a car can do to a person's head, face and body.

get over it, your car can be repaired. how was the cyclist? i bet his recovery will be a lot longer than your car's panelbeating.

It's simple. Most cars these days are very soft, for safety reasons.

My new BMW 1 series is a good example, its "nose" (which most journalists mocked to no end when it was introduced at the end of last year) is specifically designed to absorb impact with pedestrians, so there is about a 30cm gap between the bumper and the body itself. When I stand in front of it, I can literally push it in almost a centimetre just by lightly using my thumbs.

Gone are the days of solid structures on the extremeties of vehicles, it's just too dangerous.

A couple of years back I had to dive into a parked car to avoid a crazy woman in a merc. The damage was about 7.5k.

Then the owner of the parked car claimed I crashed into the boot, slid over the roof, over the bonnet, then stood up and keyed all 4 doors - because he wanted me to respray the entire car.

back in 2009, a cyclist hist me from the side and caused R23 00 damage.

his head dented the top arch of the side. he flew over the car, got up and started cycling again...

oh, did i mention it was "Mr" on his reverse-pedal-to-brake Black "single speed", rigid fork?

Seems like only bumper damage. They are made from plastic, and intended to deform on impact. Brackets would have broken off, hence the gap between bodywork and bumber. Looks worse than it is. You might need a new bumber (and brackets) though...

In 2001 i had a lady, driving an Audi A8, turn in front of me my fork went into the door, the STI cut her door open,my elbow broke her window and my helmet dented her roof.I ended up with loads of stitches from the glass but i didn't break anything. So i think we are harder than we think.

True, I was immediately worried that I killed the guy, expecting a body and blood on the road, instead, nothing.

Oh, and It really was his fault, driving over a red light on a major intersection.....
