I am looking at the vario home which the guys at stilcoffee assured will do either

Espresso

Press

Filter

grinds perfectly. Isn't the W the same as the home but the one is timer based and the other weight based....you have me worried now V12...

Nope - the Vario for Espresso has ceramic and the Vario W metal burrs - don't know if there is a difference in their ability to grind for espresso - just say the comment on the Vario W's page that it was not suitable for Espresso...

Yea although they look the same, they are different machines....the W can't do a fine grind whereas the home can.

Okay I reckon I've narrowed down my selection to the following...

Nuova Simonelli Oscar (price TBC) or the Lafaimac machine (subject to price confirmation) but reckon it will be expensive

Got a quote on the Isomac Tea, but R15000 ex Vat is a bit on the steep side, also the power hungry concerns are putting me off as well.

On the grinder, looks like the Mazzer Mini Doser less, unless there is anybody that can convince me otherwise on a cheaper but as reliable and solid grinder?

I won't try to convince you about the grinder - but if budget is a big concern - look at the NS grinder that they can bundle with the Oscar - but it will not be as solid as a Mazzer... on the other hand - Espresso is like bikes - always an upgrade available... and lets face it - everyone should have a decaf grinder too.... eventually :)

Wega Mini Nova is a great machine - no idea what the artisan machine is at al.

Will have a look. But you're right, the price of a later upgrade almost justifies buying a good one first time around.

Maybe.... but if this obsession/addiction of coffee making does not grab you, then top end kit is a waste - and sometimes good enough is good enough.

I cannot in good conscience say that I can always taste the difference between my Robur and Mini Elec - some days I think I can, and somedays not.... might have something to do with the weather... or the state of the clouds or some such - what I DO know is that the Robur was about 3 times the price of the Mini, and it for sure is MUCH bigger, heavier and definitely grinds way faster and annoys the wife more than the Mini (which is in a box in my study - on top of a very pretty piece of stainless art)

Now I know what you are talking about - no comparison - Kichen Aid Artisan is junk compared to the Wega - ok - its actualy just not a comparison - the Wega can go on my counter, the Kitchen Aid I would not spend a cent on - and if someone gave it to me I would hide it.

Ha ha ok I did not know its that bad machine ! The looks and the dabble boiler hand me wondering but u cleared it up for me ! Lol

Im going to have a go on my coffee plunger later, I used to be very into different tea and methods but now coffee is what i want to try!!

Well - you can combine them.... you can make tea espresso style... my wife does it with the Rooibos Red espresso... I won't comment on taste.... not my thing, but plenty of people do like it. :)

My coffee machine is a plunger, kettle and one of those old english cast iron nr 3 coffee grinders. Made the best cup of Kenyan coffee this morning from beans my mom bought on the plantation a few weeks back for me.

Nice! Gf and I bought a Husqvarna No. 10 "Reliance" meat grinder recently at the Irene Market. Has a rustic charm, but turns out one can't use a meat grinder for coffee beans :'(

Any recommendations where to get an old-school coffee grinder in Gauteng?
