United Posted May 30, 2012 Share Any advice for a new starter on which bike to buy. Pricing is similar, both seem to have good reviews
rouxtjie Posted May 30, 2012 Share Anthem, there was a shootout of these two in this month's MBUK, Anthem took top honours, also having been on both I really rate the Giant Nimby
Swift01 Posted May 30, 2012 Share So your rating the Giant above your GF bike?
rouxtjie Posted May 30, 2012 Share So your rating the Giant above your GF bike?Yes...***saying it very sheepishly*** It's not that the GF is a hond, its just that the Giant is fantastic.
splat Posted May 30, 2012 Share From what I have heard, Trek does not have a good prescence in SA, so backup hasnt always been so good. Having said that, new people are supposed to be taking over and giving Trek SA a bit of an over haul. Giant gives you a lifetime warranty on your frame. Their geometry is quite different, so either test ride the two or get a Egofit setup done to see which bike would suit your body's proportions. Iwan Kemp Posted May 30, 2012 Share I'm with the rest here: go with the Anthem. Best value for money for what is a killer bike.
covie Posted May 30, 2012 Share Trek has the custom g2 geometry so your pretty much stuck with the shock they give you.
rouxtjie Posted May 30, 2012 Share Trek has the custom g2 geometry so your pretty much stuck with the shock they give you. That really is a double edged sword, it handles very well especially on slow very rocky climbs, but it takes getting used to since it makes the bike feel twitchy. PS if my fork goes caput one day, I wont be replacing it with a G2 fork
covie Posted May 30, 2012 Share Yeah i heard the G2 is twitchy as hell, thats the last quality i want on a bike. So was never even a option for me.
El Dodgius Bastardo Posted May 30, 2012 Share I've heard of quite a few people that's replaced the G2 fork with a non-G2 to make the handling a touch slower
rouxtjie Posted May 30, 2012 Share I've heard of quite a few people that's replaced the G2 fork with a non-G2 to make the handling a touch slowerThat will be the plan here...also I reckon to get a G2 fork I will have to hoes big tom.
El Dodgius Bastardo Posted May 30, 2012 Share The Hi-Fi Pro that I bought (that went AWOL) had a non-G2 Rockshox fork, so I did quite a bit of research on it. Your local option would be to walk into Cycle Lab and ask them to get you a fork, making you take a nice R5k-R7k shower. Or you could get lucky and find one on eBay, but who knows how long it might take.
Edge_Design Posted May 30, 2012 Share I haven't ridden the Trek, but can definitely vouch for the Anthem (I have a custom specced X29 0 and the the older XT X29 1 briefly before it)... I'm sure the Trek is also an awesome bike though so I wouldn't count it out! Edited May 30, 2012 by Edge_Design
VT2jp Posted May 30, 2012 Share Have also not ridden the Trek myself. Own an Anthem X29 (Silver) - it's a rocket through and through and if you can, the downhills are also super fast - even very technical stuff.
_David_ Posted May 30, 2012 Share I like the Trek... but be careful of advice given over the internet, take both bikes for a test ride and decide for yourself.
