Are Chiropractors for real?

Are they for real or is it just a waste of time and money?

Been for 5 sessions already for neck and lower back and the problems still exist.

Have been told they work on your subcontious aswell?

Dont know if I must go back for more or not.

What is some of your experiences

I had the same issue , went for many sessions then told the dude it's not helping . I starting stretching again ( as I had stopped ) and the pains all went away.

So do a stretch session each evening before you get into bed , I can almost guarantee it will fix you .

Armstrong reckoned their chiro was the most important member of the support team during his years riding TDF.

More important than Dr Ferrari!?

Oh, wait, I forgot. He never doped. That's right.

The big thing is there are Chiro's and there are Chiro's.

My wife is a Chiropractor, and looks after a couple of pro athleats.

Session with her are often an hour, as she does a lot more than just a ruk en pluk.

Also what is important is she understands athleats and strains they put on their bodies.

Most patients, athleats and sedentry folk' also leave with a streaching and exercise routine. those that comply achieve results quicker. (she also refers to a biokinetisist and Pilates when required)

To many people rely on someone else to fix them, and take no ownership of the process. it is a team effort. DO the streaching!

I have never been to a chiro, but use Body Stress Release to sort my lower back issues out.

But not the soft touch type. That does nothing for me. The practitioner I see has hands of steel and penetrates deep into the muscle.

As mentioned my someone previously, stretching is highly under rated. If I don't stretch regularly, I find myself in trouble and looking for a BSR appointment.

New school of thought in chiro seems to be getting better - they take a more holistic approach to treatment, as opposed to simple manipulation. Alignment etc. is only as good as the tendons and muscles around it. So while manipulation may work, without a proper integrated treatment regime, your chances of success could be limited. Hence the stretching etc. really needs to be properly done, if not accompanied by some physio.

Another point to note is that when considering back pain etc., get scans done prior to seeing a chiro. The absolute LAST thing you want is manipulation when there's a chance you could have a bulging/prolapse disc or something similar.

Personally, the fact that medical council opinion is still out on them, due to what seems to be a lack of empirical trials, I'm a bit iffy about using a chiro's. Undoubtedly there's some benefit to be had, but it's a bit "black box" for me. I accept that that could simply be due to my own ignorance, although the whole medical council thing suggests not so.

I have Scoliosis and got head aches basically every day in school... untill I went to see a chiropractor and a few months later my pain was gone and still going strong :) I still have scoliosis but the pain is gone :D Not to say it was all because of the chiropractor but he definitely helped me and maybe just helped make me aware of my back. I think cycling has helped a lot too.

Some Chiro's just treat your pain, others try prevent it in the future.

I've been for physio multiple times for my shoulder//neck pain, been to a chiro multiple times, orthopedic surgeon who put a cortosone injection in my shoulder (which helped the pain for a year) and it kept coming back.

Finally went to see a different Chiro and its making a huge difference. She didn't just treat the pain, she gave me exercises to strengthen my mucsles so that my shoulder is kept in the correct place (it currently sits further forward than my other one). It really hurt at first, but I'm now seeing the results and haven't had to use anti-inflammatories for over a month.

Everyone else had told me to rest the shoulder completely or do light streches which was just making the problem worse.

Howzit guys,

I'm in the profession and from an unbiased position Chiropractic is a great alternative to sports injuries and any pain that involves the nervous, muscular and skeletal system. Now obviously I am not saying we treat fractures and that sort of trauma but are definitely able to facilitate a quality and quick healing process.

So let me clear up a few things:

If you go and purchase a new bicycle and it turns out to be quite shite, do you stop riding? No...you ride it out and where possible you get a new bike and carry on riding. Same thing applies to Chiropractic treatment. This is the general consensus, after 8 treatments if you do not feel improvement then please find another chiropractor to address the problem. Our profession has diversified and on one side we have the guys that are scientifically evidence based and on the opposite side of the spectrum we have more alternative thinking practitioners. We all have our place in the healthcare system. There are ruk-n-pluk doctors out there, I for one am not one and my results are more than adequate.

We are not miracle workers, we can't (although it does happen) fix people and give them instant relief. Your body is able to slip out of alignment the moment we are born. Our body will form a pattern to cope with these minor changes and often we start to feel these changes when we grow older and less resilient or when the demands (sport activity) on our body increase. These malalignments and patterns are carried for years and often we have to re-educate the body how to hold itself and move correctly, so in essence give it some time, have sessions until you start to feel good then space them out until you visit the chiro on a monthly/bimonthly basis.

I am a young chiropractor trying to change peoples views on Chiropractic because unfortunately our history is somewhat tarnished. I am operating in Morningside and an avid cyclist and so I understand many aspects of riding and injuries associated with riding. I advocate chiropractic treatment for everyone and am happy to answer any questions related to the profession and any injury related questions, email me on mays.jay@gmail.com or book with me, Jaidan on 0117840052/54

I've had gone to chiros on a few occassions when things feel out of whack, with good results. The ruk and pluk technique might just be so scary that the body fixes itself.

I was a patient of the late DR Ron Coetzee and he always said "Healing is not a incident but it is a process"

I do believe they have a place as my quality of life improved a lot no more pain killers ,and this is since 1995.I do still visit the chiro 4 times a year for treatment.

Go to see a good sports massage therapist. Identify your problem areas, mostly in the legs and also get the iMuscle App for your phone or tablet.

Thank me later. I switched from Chiro to this and I feel super!
