Reading this thread it seems that some hubbers go on picnics instead of training rides.

The fitter you re the less liquids you'll need.

Any ride up to 2hrs can be done with water, longer rides 2 - 5 hrs can be done with carb drinks (game, energade, powerade, 32Gi, etc) and an energy bar/s.

There's also no legal drink / food that will make you ride like a PRO - there's no alternative for training !!!!

Over the past 17 years I have been cyclin,g I saw a lot of stuff people do and use.

In the beginning I did not leave the house without a bag full of stuff.

The supplement industry have made us sooooo dependant on their stuff. We forget the days we trained and raced on half coke, half water....and it worked!!

As for me......if it's a ride like yesterday, 3 hours easy, I use one bottle of water. 4 hours = 2 bottles of water.

As for racing, one bottle of water and one mixed with USN Epic Pro if the race is over 100km.

In general people eat too much on their rides!

+1 - use only water/bananas (occasionally an energy bar, any one!) for training - generally weekend training rides can be up to 5hrs ....

For races I use FiT Carbo Supreme (bout 500ml per hour) and alternate between a banana/energy bar every hour and take SupaGoos for 'in between' half hours towards the end (2 or so ....)

Like most posters said, rides under 2hrs = water only (but have a fueling meal before the ride) Long rides of 2 - 4hrs = 32Gi Endurance with 2 x Jungle energy Bars (which I nibble on as I go along) Endurance rides of longer than 4 hrs, the pre ride meal is very important, as well as proper hydration in the days leading up to the ride. During the ride I use the 32Gi Endurance drink.Solid food is a "special" sarmie made up of full grain bread and a mashed banana mixed with crunchy Peanut Butter. For races (100km), proper hydration in days leading up to race is very important, as well as proper fueling meal before the race. During the race only 32Gi Accelerate (2 x bottles) I find that I do not have to eat during the race. This is what works best for me.

what he said - over time your metabolism adapts to handle the energy requirements for the specific training you're doing.

Bottle 1 - Hammer Perpetuem

Bottle 2 - USN Epic Pro

2 Hammer Gels.

This is for rides longer than 100km.

I have tried many combos and this works best for me...

Wow, I am going to write some of this stuff down

I use FIT in my bottles and nothing else. and no breakfast.

This is for any ride 50 - 120km.

Maybe if I eat something (or alot) I will be able to keep up a bit more.

Very good thread - thanks

Just remember, OP, what works for Joe PRO might not work for you...

It's all about testing, trying, experimenting until you hit that formula that works for you.

In general, real food is what PROs use most of the time.

I follow that standard as they have to train almost every day for 10 months of the year.

wow someone's making a mint off you lot with all these food-replacement supplements.

nuts, potatoes, pbj sarmies ftw! (although granted I'm never going to be standing on any podiums)

And for me anyway I don't agree on the 'you just need to train more' thing. Obviously to a degree that's true, but anything longer than about 2 hrs and if I don't eat every hour ish starting at hour 1, I hit a SERious energy crisis, doesn't seem to matter the fitness level. Praps its just me though

Water works for me up to about 50km, then I need something to carry me home for the last 30 odd km's on my regular ride. That said I alsways have a Powerbar and a gel in my back pocket just in case, and a few R's for a coke (mix with water so you don't get a big sugar spike) if needed.

For races around 100km, Epic Pro suits me just fine.
