greenlight Posted July 30, 2012 Posted July 30, 2012 (edited) At what age did you start cycling, who and how did you get into it? (Can include your first bike and pic?) Edited July 30, 2012 by greenlight
DR ◣◢ Posted July 30, 2012 Posted July 30, 2012 About 12 or 13. A friend from church was in to road and took me along to a fun ride. Was cool but not really great. Another group of friends had mountain bikes. I was always more interested in off road riding anyways. One day I met this kid with a black GT Zaskar with a gold Rock Shox Mag 21. Was 16 years ago and he is still my best friend. Tiny K 1
BergForce Posted July 30, 2012 Posted July 30, 2012 Got a way too big for me Peugeot Rapport in 1990 when I was 14, then got a full rigid steel Diamond Back Apex in 1992.
Leonard Posted July 30, 2012 Posted July 30, 2012 Started when I was 18.Had to find a sport for when I left school and settled on cycling.
jannosmit Posted July 30, 2012 Posted July 30, 2012 All my life. Pretty cool actually. Rugby onnies tuned me cycling aint a sport, now I'm still riding and the rugby oakes are over weight doing nothing. A lot of my school buddies started mtb'ing as well this year. Tiny K, Azonic, TYGA and 1 other 4
Agteros Posted July 30, 2012 Posted July 30, 2012 Dad was prison administrator, had a prisoner (tame one!) who pushed me/followed on my little bike whilst learning to ride on two wheels. The day/moment when I rode away from him I still remember clearly. The joy and excitement to 'race' home and scream the accomplishment out to all and sundry! Also broke my collar bone before I was of school going age. Brake (only front on that bike) was a bit off, so rocked up at dads office, insisting that it be fixed, he told me he'll do it later. On my way back home, I got carried away and realised I do not have brakes and will hit the main street going out the grounds. Tried back pedalling (all other bikes in the area had back pedal brakes, so surely it'll work on mine as well!), lost my balance and down I went. Do not remember the actual fall, but I do remember holding the x-ray machine(or something?) for the x-rays. Don't remember my arm in a sling either!
Stretch Posted July 30, 2012 Posted July 30, 2012 9 - used to have to haul my DHC to school and back. Sure we rode bikes before that - but thats when i cycled daily. no races or anything just the daily grind - where there even races then? there werent even mtb's.......were there road races for laaitjies? after the dhc, was some home brewn bmx the old man put together - was as heavy as heck - then a Western flyer that i had till varsity.....and thats when mtb's reared their head......and it was all downhill from there...literally
sharkysa Posted July 30, 2012 Posted July 30, 2012 10 years old a Peugeot racing bike followed by a Hanson and a purple diamond back(big in Benoni at the time). My dad and I did all the fun rides until I gave up riding to play rugby...but I am back after 15 years!
