Yes they are special, they are not std of the shelve units.

Does anyone know if the Monarch shocks on Pygas are specially tuned/shimmed or are they "off the shelf"?

As much as I'm loving the Pyga, I'm not sure if I totally get along with the monarch rt3 shock tune:

1. Though the sag is set to 30%, I am yet to bottom out fully. This suggests (to me at least) that the high speed compression damping may be a little too firm.

2. The rebound is on the fastest setting. It's probably ok as it is, but if I could I wouldn't mind experimenting with one or 2 notches faster.

3. I hardly ever use the platform compression adjustment setting. It's on open the whole time. If there was a more plush setting I'd probably flick into that some of the time.

So in short, I find it a bit overdamped. I'd be willing to trade off some pedalling efficiency for a bit more plushness and compliance over bumpy/rocky terrain. So at some point in the future I'm probably going to either get in there and adjust the shims, or get someone to do it for me, or look to upgrade the shock.

I'd be curious to know how the monarch plus compares. I've heard good things about it.

Not on a bike that has a 67deg head angle and takes 150 - 160mm forks... if heights an issue then a 29r frame running similar geo might be the answer...

Standard frames from established brands stop around the XL size. Its what i got :)

Next step was going to a custom frame, and that was too much effort for me, I am actually quite happy with my set up, not too stoopid looking..... and not crashed too many times.

BUT : a 120 mm stem on a medium frame might not be the way to go.

Unfortunately there isn't even an XL 650b. I'm on a large with a 50mm stem. I'm 5'11'' with quite long arms and the sizing is perfect. So it's tough for the really tall guys.

Yes, this is what I'm thinking.

As far as I could glean from Patrick, the shock not reaching bottom-out is part of his suspension design. He suggested that it could be run at pretty low pressures and still not bump.

And I agree with all your points. Also feels like the shock needs to be run at a lower pressure with more rebound.

It's a progressive suspension design, but it got to be a function of the shock tune as well.

If I could reduce the high speed compression damping a bit, I'd run the shock at a slightly higher pressure with less sag, say max 25%, and still be able to use most if not all the travel. Higher air pressure would also speed up the rebound a little.

Finally finished my build after what has seemed like years of waiting!

Thanks to Dwayne and David Arpin from Big Wheel Cycles in the midlands for helping with the build. They worked into the night on the bike and wheels to get it ready for a race the next day. They're also PYGA dealers!

Thanks also to Brenton from Zion Bikes n Somerset West (hubber Bibi) for all his help with speccing the bike and parts supply. Great guy, great service and some cool parts!

Front brake cable should be routed on the inside/wheel side of the lowers, not on the outside ;)

Cane creek => Yes

Should, => No, you have to ask for it, you pay for it.

As far as I know, the frame should ship with a headset. Pretty sure its a Cane Creek too.

Hi guys, I need some advice, would you recommend this headset? http://www.cwcycles....1=1#quicktabs-1

That's probably the wrong headset. Rather get the folk who're supplying your frame to send a headset with it - hunting for the correct one is a nightmare. Pygas have a cup at the top, but they don't take a cup at the bottom, the bottom - the bearing just fits straight into the frame. Measurements on their site.
