RANT: Cape Town City cycle lanes

I think it is fair to post pictures of us if we post pictures of them.... ;)

For sure they can and should.....and if I knew those riders they would get a chirp from me.

What is this 1.5m they keep talking about....it is 1m.

Almost like us using 21 seconds to show a finger to someone hooting at us, making sure we built a better relationship with motorists

Who said anything about giving them the finger? 21 second is a lot of time to give someone the finger.

If you think the relationship between motorists and cyclists has anything to do with cyclist deaths you are very mistaken. When a bus or truck does not see a cyclist, no difference, when a taxi pulls out without looking, no difference, when done bimbo is tweeting while driving, no difference, when Piet had had one too many beers, no difference.

So over people moaning about attitudes.

Got a response from Blue Ribbon saying they have told the driver and also the bakery that they are not to park in the lane.

Good to see such a fast and positive response from a brand,

Nice, the more we bring it to their attention the better.

Was the fining blitz a one time thing, or will that be a continued campaign until people learn not to park in that green bike lane?

Its been a while since I last rode home from work via Woodstock, so it was interesting to note how many cars park along that stretch.

From Lower Church St to the circle, there was one car in the lane.

From the circle to the lights before the bakery, it was bumper to bumper.

Trying to dodge parked cars is hazardous on a road bike with those big bumps/cats eyes that demarcate the bike lane.

Now if only they can also secure the cycle-path through Woodstock.  Fence has been broken down/damaged in so many spots, they can take it down.  I have tweeted everyone including Helen & kie and even some of their friends.  The response has been unresponsive or so poor, not committing etc. that I just gave up.

Will use the tweets and responses in my legal case against the city when I get mugged on that part of the route...

That part of the bike path is a sad show.

Ride in groups or when it is really busy with people walking to work.

Miss that time slot and it gets really lonely... I then normally ride up the bridge at the Woodstock bus stop and then down onto the single track next to the N1 and Marine drive. Works both ways. Idiotic that one has to do this but it feels much safer (and its not ON the N1 but next to it).

Can that detour be done on a road bike?

I've been commuting for years with no hassles. Today was my first time on that green cycle lane through Woodstock and a car cut across the bike lane and BAM! Sitting here with 2 fractured ribs and collapsed lung. I know I was going faster than I should have been but still think that lane isn't a decent solution

Thanks. Nah I didn't see the point. The guy didn't look like he would have been insured and I have medical aid. Only broke a spoke so I carried on riding to work
