[Event] NISSAN TRAILSEEKER #5 Hakahana

It's easy to sit here today and say I enjoyed the 40km but to be honest it was brutal. I made a lot of jokes, telling people that rode past me while I was walking the climb after the second water point that they must stop doping but that was just so I wouldn't burst into tears from exhaustion and cramps.

I haven't done much riding lately and weigh in at 99kg's while I should be weighing around 84kg's. Does it get better and easier to ride these races the longer you do it?

Also, was this a standard 40km or was this one of the tougher races?

We had a rooihartbees going full speed and crossing the road ahead of us. Not very close but I can see how the whole buck norris thing can happen.

"It never gets easier, you just go faster"... words of Greg LeMond

Started cycling at the beginning of the year at trailseeker 1 and did all 5. Hakahana was definately the toughest by far! Did the first 31km in 2 hours (and that's where the fight started). The last 8km took me an hour with all the cramping! I guess all that cramp block I was swallowing didn't help me... Any suggestions on what else I can try to prevent cramping?

I remember the jokes as I rode pass you. The guy behind me still commented "you wish" - at least it broke the tired feeling for a short while

Perhaps you drank too much water?

It can also be an indication of you were exerting too much effort for your fitness level. I didn't ride it but I understand it was a rather tough ride. Suggestion? Try doing some intervals.

I find that going into a easier gear and to get my cadence higher helps.

@jcza sorry i missed u guys at the end. Looked around but couldn't find you. May have been lucky cause after my disjointed day on the trails i would have cleaned you out of spike bombs. So the question has to be asked who is going the cradle quest at VG on the 24th nov....... Beware i will have to ride a geared bike now i have no SS Ha Ha

Pity you couldn't find us - a beer and a bomb makes the world a brighter place again - See you at cradle quest!

Drank roughly 1l over 40km, doubt that was too much? Had cramp block as suggested on the pack... I'm guessing me weighing 104kgs might have something to do with it?

Intervals?

Was speaking to the camera man on the 2nd time i stopped on the wooden bridge about 8km into the race. Believe some youngster crashed off the bridge and concussed himself.

That youngster was a moron. He was riding the 20K, there was a long line of people waiting patiently to cross over the bridge but he pushed his way past everyone then fell off right in front of me eek.gif The camera man jumped down lifted him up, we grabbed him and put him on the side. He was obviously in lots of pain. Saw him in the medical tent after the race, medic said he was okay and they were giving him something for the shock.

Felt like a complete dirt roadie on the ride. Flew along the flat sections at a good pace, but as soon as the track turned uphill, I just went backwards. Apologies to all those that had to get past my walking ass on the climbs. Definitely need to practice my hill climbing some more.

The route itself was great. The single track was good and varied. The 1st steep downhill was scary! Big respect to those that rode down that. The off-camber rock section before and after the 1st waterpoint was seriously technical, and required proper skills and commitment. I lost my sense of humor on the uphill after the 2nd waterpoint, but quickly found it again on the next descent.

Overall, still relatively pleased with my 40km result.
