Sometimes the night bus can be the best part of the evening ..if you dont fall asleep and miss your stop :whistling:

When I lived in Prague, the night tram was awesome...It was full of drunkards(including myself), so the odd stumble, fight and public vomitting spell was common. It directly contributed to how much I was willing to drink...

Maybe its a good thing we don't have a night bus here...I might turn into an alcoholic, pretty much like all my friends who still live in Prague...

Also here, the chances of being mugged and/or raped/sodomized on the night bus would be significantly higher....

Hmmm,

how about someone sue's the police/traffic department after one of these unsuccessful cases for improper procedures etc,

Start holding them accountable for not sticking to rules/procedures etc themselves.

So that the government also realise they are being watched and will be held accountable if they are responsible allowing one of these idiots back on the road.

How about barring the driver from driving while he is being investigated for something like DUI. I understand innocent until proven guilty, but at some point the public also needs protection.

Funny you should mention that. The traffic dept used to have units (not sure if they still do) who were dispatched to an accident scene purely to check if state property (traffic lights, etc) were damaged and to get the details of the person responsible. It would've been nice to have someone there to check procedure. The sad fact is that prosecution depts are overwhelmed, understaffed etc. I have yet to see a court case being handled decisively and finalized on the accused first appearance.

I agree our cycling federation must get on board and so we will all feel we contribute to saver cycling. Pay a few lawyers in each province a retention fee and be available on a cellphone number for guidance to all who find themselves a witness to such crime?

back to applying the law, and applying a scary sentence, to the fact that if someone is caught, they know they will get a sentence that they don't want.

Law needs to be applied, with matching sentence, which is a proper deterrent.

Atm you can do anything and get away with so little cost that the "benefit" always wins the scale of cost.

Traffic and driving are policed very well.

Not a day goes by that I don't see a road block and spot breatheralizer checks.

Your drivers is taken away on the spot and your car is impounded if you are over the limit.

People here respect the law........count how many people you see jumping a red light in SA per day.

They do it because they know that they can get away with it.

I was in SA in August for 2 weeks and saw one traffic cop in that time.........she was standing in front of me in a bank.

I was driving from Queenstown to PE this evening and heard on Algoa FM, that Mr Gouws has been officially charged with murder and remanded in custody, his bail hearing is tomorrow.

Gouws has been charged with murder, a 25 year jail term to a young man with his life in front of him, should wake a few people up, make a few examples and then maybe there will be change.

That all been said most of us have driven drunk once or twice in their lives, and have been lucky to not be involved with a mess like this, maybe we should all start here and pledge to not drive drunk.... I have, don't want my kids growing up without a dad because he drove drunk and ruined someone else's life.

It's small but a start!

We first have to hope that the judge is not corrupt or incompetent so that this piece of excrement is found guilty. We then have to hope that no "human rights" (ie criminal rights) lawyers or viewpoints get his sentence reduced the way they claim criminals aree entitled to.

RIP to the cyclist.

Some good suggestions here but what can each of us actually do?

I have nagged, threatened, assisted (lifts, taxi fare etc) etc my kids about driving after drinking. I am way more careful than I was in my stupid youth (well, stupider than I am now if that's possible). CSA should certainly lend a hand to monitor the prosecution and support the family.

As an aside I believe Glen Haw has personally been incredibly supportive, involved and helpful to the widow of the Sani2c competitor who was killed returning to Jhb. Nedbank coughed up the insurance money in a flash too.

Otherwise its more breathalysers near well known all night drinking spots (casino in Durban), some sort of threat to those serving alcohol to drunks and making alternatives known. But I wouldn't know how to start doing any of the above. CSA should apply what pressure they can.

Many of the major cities around SA now have very popular "public servant news networks" FB pages where fans, amongs other things, make posts about where roadblocks are to warn fellow drunk drivers to avoid. Shockingly it seems this behaviour of helping criminals and potential murderers is legal !?

Apologies if I inadvertently shot anyone down. Not my intention at all.

Didn't see that at all???!

My comment came out of my own need to see a positive approach. This sh*t of having a problem we try to find solutions to then getting stuck into each other seems to be a Saffa thing but it's getting to me. don't enjoy 'handbags at dawn' so much anymore, given where we all seem to be going. rather take a leaf out of the Table Mtn group's (Kandui & co) approach.
