Fun time building a SS

I have finished building a SS from an old Giant XTC Frame and Duke fork. I reckon the bike was a 2002 model.

I stripped the frame back to raw alu and gave it a polish with 800 grit water paper, rebuilt the shock from the ground up incl a new spray job and got a crank and tensioner from CRC, finished it off with components in the garage (yes we all have them) and there you have it a SS. The biggest surprise are the brakes, I put on some mean looking Clarks pads and the stopping power is superb, no worries on that front.

There are still some small tweaks to come. New Swalbe Albert UST tyres and a green seat post clamp and star nut to match the tensioner. Also need to polish up a few bits on the brakes which have a bit of rust.

The bike come in at 9.8kg at the moment and will drop a bit with the UST tyres, so overall I am a happy guy. Tomorrow I will be commuting to work on her.

Very cool.

Those old LX cranks are perfect for SS cranks.

Only change Id make is a proper SS chainring for the front.

I am new to this SS thing. What rings would you recommend and where do I get them? Thanks.

You have a few options actually

I use Blacksprire on the trail bike and Gusset on the SS.

Have a chat to Grant Usher at www.singlespeed.co.za. He stocks both brands.

The single speed rings have no ramps or shifting spots and they are a bit thicker than the normal ones. The teeth are also a bit longer and it helps to prevent the chain jumping off.

The Gusset ones come in nice colours so you should be able to get a green one

You can continue using the middle blade as you have now. It's not a major thing for now to do.

I have the same tensioner on my ss and it seems to slide up from pushing the chain down. The chain then becomes loose and falls off. Have you had the same issues?

I have now set the tensioner to push up on the ChaIn and It seems far better.

Any idea on price for a 32? Thanks for the info.

I have used some low strength locktite on the bolts. Let's see how it goes.

I think they are around R350 to R400. A bit expensive but it will last forever.

32T is a very cool size. Keeps the cranks looking nice and compact.

Nice build MuddyMike.

Have a look at dialdbikes.co.za

They have SS specific chainrings and chains. Run both on my SS.

YAY I am not the only SS guy with V-Brakes. Nice build. Makes we want to re-build mine just so I can well re-build it. Like the old LX cranks. Going to be building the GF's SS bike soon which is an old Silver trek and was thinking of getting the set of old LX cranks sandblasted then polish them up. At least not i know it will work...

Many happy miles

Congratulations sir! Awesome build.

You never forget your first - especially when it's that personal. Awesome.

@Swift - my first SS also had Vees.

Oh yeah - if you're really into modding I suggest cable guide removal. It'll look super clean!
