After reading a bunch of posts:

@flowta - thanks for the SRAM info.

@pro commuter - smallest frame you can manage is best for MonsterCross I reckon. Mtb frames are quite long and adding the length (and drop) of a road bar can make you quite low. As Rouxtjie said - short stem and short reach bars are best.

If you lower yourself to buying off the shelf there is only one option really:

Isn't that basically just a CX bike?

No. Different geometry. Fatter tyres. Bastard cousin maybe, but not the same.

I just had another look at that RLT 9 and very much designed as a CX bike. Geo certainly closer to a road bike than an mtb (Niner says "built to a 'fire road geometry"), although admittedly more relaxed geo and longer chainstays than a classic CX bike (like the Niner BSB).

Wheels are still too skinny IMHO to be classified as a monstercross bike.

RLT isn't a monstercross. Slightly slacker geo than a CX. Like a Sportive vs a Race bike. It's a gravel grinder. The BSB is CX. Neither are monstercross.

But then when I originally said it's basically a CX bike, why did you disagree with me?

You agree with me now, I see.

Was reading the thread on my phone - thought you were refering to BigBens build as being a CX. Didn't realise you were refering to a previous post regarding the RLT.

It's definately close to a CX bike but with some subtle differences, especially that they have a dedicated CX in the BSB.

On a scale of CX bike to Monstercross the RLT slides towards the CX IMO.

... Sounds like someone's found a genre they like.

I've actually been thinking about this for some time. Out in the Valley of a Thousand Hills, beyond the tar roads, there is some epic enduro riding waiting to be discovered. I've stood at the top of distant "road to nowhere" tar passes out there that peter out to dirt roads, frustrated to hell that I can't go any further with my Tarmac. Google Earth shows vast swathes of untapped mountainous country that makes me very itchy. I originally thought of my next bike being a CX bike so that I could ride into the Valley + backpack and when I get to these special places, just keep going. But now tossing up the idea of a monstercross bike, because connecting all these places are also endless goat tracks and paths as well.

On another note, I've also thought about a moustache handlebar being a good idea for the Freedom Challenge (when I eventually get round to it), esp. those long flat headwind stretches I hear about in the Karoo. What do you reckon, think it could work?

A pic of at the top of one of those road-to-nowhere tar passes looking out to what still needs to be explored...
