Coming down Fairy Glen on Saturday afternoon, and I run (almost literally) into two separate groups of walkers on the single track. Luckily I wasn't going too fast or somebody could have gotten quite seriously injured.

Then they have the audacity to ask me why I don't have a bell on my bike. I don't mind the odd walker on the jeep track, but on the single track it's quite dangerous.

Is there any way we can keep walkers off the single track? My understanding is that the singletrack in that section is meant for biking, or is it a shared path?

M. Interesting. It's probably more out of ignorance than anything else. There are walkers only tracks and as far as I know the MTB tracks are MTB specific. The only real way I see is effective signage.

Now as far as i know the hiking trails go up from under the hut by the gate, how come the rangers didnt tell them that the way they went up was mtb trails and they should stick to the jeep track? then again are they supposed to?

Ja that's true. But the guys at the gate have no control over the people that go in and out there. I often ask the guys at the gate why they don't block people without helmets and they reckon they cop so much flack that they just don't bother anymore. I'm sure it's the same with walkers.

On Saturday we were marking sections of the Helderberg MTB route and one of the guys reported that he encountered a motorcyclist following the MTB route on the section he was sign posting. It takes a lot of negotiations and goodwill to obtain the permission from landowners to allow MTBers on their property. It only takes one or two ice-holes to stuff it up for everybody. Already landowners are insisting on a club-members only control due to abuse by bunches of MTBers not appreciating the privilege of being allowed to ride there.

You guys know that mountain bikes have the ability to ride off trails as well. Have you tried riding around people?

Do you mean over them? Like a 4x4?

I was pinning it down Vasbyt on Sunday morning and there was a woman jogging down the single track with her husband/partner riding behind her on his mountain bike. Luckily it was right near the bottom, so didnt ruin my run, but would have been less polite if it was further up.

It could have been dangerous if I had met them at high speed around a blind corner.

There are so many places that we cant ride in Tokai, why must there be runners on the single track?
