sorry for another topic on saddle sores, but the type I have dont seem to have been discussed.

Since my change in bike setup I've developed saddle sores on my sit bones. Now doing some research mine are not the normal hair follicle or chaffing type, they are the boil type. A hard boil type swelling on each sit bone.

I've been off the bike for a week trying to give it a rest and have been treating with bepanthen and liberal amounts of baby powder, also going commando when ever I can. But a week later they are still there.

Any cures ?

I think the reason for getting them is the new bike setup. I used to have my saddle rather high, the LBS dropped my saddle considerably but because of the huge difference between what they set it at and what I had it at I lifted it slightly. I think if I drop the saddle back to where they set it I should not get the sores as easily again.

But for now I need to cure the damned things so that I can get back on the bike.

Ja they are more like pressure sores. I got one under my right sit bone. Had to lance it by standing with my back to the full length mirror in the bedroom and then bending over and looking through my legs.

A helluva sight, I can tell you.

Then savlon, betadine, etc.

I found on my road bike that spending a lot of time in the drops, does take the direct pressure off the sit bones. Eventually it turned into a hard callous and after that all was fine again.

Still have nightmares about what I saw in that day in the mirror though...

Like Tom says, they're pressure sores or Ischemic sores. Just like bed sores. Caused by localised pressure that restricts the blood flow to an area and it then gets vrot internally. You have to lance them and relieve the pressure. You've already given yourself clues as to the cause - sort that out.

Baby power and udder cream and lubricants won't help. It isn't a chafe, it is a pressure sore. Lance, disinfect, rest.

They can go away in a week if you give yourself time off the saddle.

So in terms of cure, my solution was to ride through it, keep it clean, take direct pressure off the sit bone by adopting a more agressive/low pozzie on the bike, and let a permanent callous form. After that you got a bullet proof butt.

Thank guys. The wife already lanced them and got some gunk out. And like I've said, I've been off the bike for a week already.

Is there any harm in just getting back on the bike ? I cant stand doing less than 100km a week.

You'll quickly feel whether it is good for you or not. If you have to ride, attempt to move so that you don't touch the hotspots. Usually when they're lanced and flat again, it heals very quickly. But give it a few days. Go do something else. Walk the dog, walk to the pub, go run....no, that sucks.

I did 40km on sunday and another 30km yesterday and man oh man were they swollen.

I've dropped the the saddle to the correct height before the rides but it did not seem to help.

Maybe try some adjustment forward and backward on the saddle?

Two things I remember:

1.) Have you changed your shorts. I got my saddle sore from cheap, crap Chamois. Really worth investigating if they come back, maybe you need some new high quality shorts with some new high density Chamois. I changed shorts after my incident. No more freebie shorts. good ones i chose personally.

2.) You can get those sit bone plasters - not sure what they are called. You can wash and re-apply them. I saw one at the lab the other day - about R400-00.

Words cannot describe the pain. It brings tears to my eyes. And the image of you lancing a nut had me chuckling and squirming...

I tried different positions on the bike, but might try physically moving the saddle if I have to
