Thanks thanks.

Wife and me was thinking of each at least 2 nights a week on Spinning bike for 90min, high intensity,

+ one Saturday ride of 40km+

I'll probably try and do another ride during the week or weekend, but does not help if we not at least on similar fitness level, only cause problems if I can easily complete and she hardly. Will just lead to frustration/fights.

Also only looking at the social side/Sani2C Trail ride

Our time is a bit limited since we have a 6 month old daughter so difficult to just get away.

I had not base to start from, partner and I did ONE long ride (over 40km)....be did Breeds and Little breeds (+-95km) in one go 12 days before the Trail started. Other 'training' included about 3 rides a week on ave 22km a ride.

We finished in 20h39min........that incl him riding with flats 2/3 days, him having tummy problems 2/3 days (no energy due to no food, etc), me flats 1 day, us on 'bigger' bikes (that does not incl 29"), stopping at each water point for at least 15min each.

It is seriously do able for anyone - I think most important for you and your wife must not get impatient with eachother and keep on doing it with the fun factor in mind, not racing. Luckily for us we ended up being a good team (even if we didnt do many rides together and knowing eachother for a short while).

I think each person should also bring his/her side and if you at a certain time feel you have more energy than the other, then assist with something extra, even if it is just fetching something at night or maybe doing his/her bike wash or filling hydration packs (admin related stuff).

I saw a lot of couples (like husband and wife) loose it with eachother along the trails, I think that drains energy quicker.

Think we'll sort of match this, but our 2 x 1.5 will probably be on the spinning bike, with a similar long ride the weekends.

Partner and I had a decent base - but even without it I think we would have been OK. We started about 10 weeks out - aimed for around 8 hours riding per week. I think we only exceeded that once and in general averaged about 7 hours per week.

The weekly breakdown was generally 3 rides: 2 x 1.5 hour high effort rides in the evenings and then a 4 hour weekend ride at cruising pace (tried to include a fair bit of climbing during the weekend rides)..

We had no issues come race days. Finished up around the 16 hour mark.

heheh,

I'm being more serious here, need to show my wife what to expect.

Looking for what the normal exercise type of plan looked like.

the 6 rides, was this weekly, how many consecutive day rides of long distance.

whats your average km/m climbed per week.

G

6 Rides in total - :) been a bit slack lately - 1 normal week is a lot more. Just download a program from somewhere like http://www.fittrack.co.za/ or Polar and follow it - if you can't get in shape in a year then maybe it's not for her.

Normally I ride between 160 and 280km a week with between 2000 and 6000m of climb - most of it on a singlespeed, and my 6 week taper/holiday before Sani is probably not a good program....

Buy Carmichaels newish book - the time crunched cyclist - follow those programs - that will help you if you are time constrained - luckily babies don't seem to mind the sound of a trainer - makes them go to sleep.

I wanted to get an TACX training, but wife prefers spinning bike, so going that way.

then she likes whats there, and willing to use often. I can always try and get some more time out on trail. her work hours are more stringent, mine more flexible.

Does anyone know if the videos shown at the race briefings of the days riding is available to download/purchase?

Last year they sent them to us after the race - just arrived in the post one day..... no charge, and from memory I did not ask for them specifically somewhere.

A spinning bike is not quite the same - better than nothing, but not as good as a trainer with a power meter, although you could go someplace like cadence cycling in 4ways for classes using one of their bikes.

Sounds like she might need some skills work too - Sean Badenhorst aka Mr Tread runs courses specifically for women . https://twitter.com/Mr_TREAD

a Tread course for her is def planned, just to help, never a waste.

From what I've seen most of the races today are build for the masses, so adding any real level of technicality is impossible since that will just end as bottle necks,

Mostly seeing nice good single track, jeep track, gravel road.

There are plenty of bottlenecks at Sani Trail (esp day 2 later batches) <_<

So don't underestimate the "technicality" for the average rider.

even in the earlier batches of the adventure.

mind you, like my teammate said if it was not for the slower riders in front of us, we would probably have ended up taking the more direct route down to the Umkho.

PS, with the recent glitch in the matrix, (that movie is not so far fetched now is it??) perhaps Patches should post his pre-sani routine here, i mean the guy finished the three days while being sick, and not having proper pedals aparently...

Yeh - and although track is not hugely 'technical', in places it is hugely exposed - cliffs, big drops etc, and if you're worried about it, you may find it not so much as 'exhilarating' as 'terrifying'...

I've had both clear runs at Nicks Pass and (slightly) congested runs. Both ways are good. Clear runs are fast = over real quick, but you can't go and do it again (until next year), congested runs - just wait until there is a gap in front of you, do your thing till you catch up, wait again... and you get more time on the hill...

This year we essentially had no real tail backs - worst was waiting to get on to the bridge at the end - this was +- H/I/J grps in Adventure.

Question: is the Adventure getting too serious? Or are we getting too close to the front in terms of batches? Previous years we've ridden L/M/N and there have been some serious banter flying. Nearer the front, it's just serious. Eh?

We're thinking of demoting ourselves to the Trail in search of good humour. Or just riding slower.

There were a number of serious racing snakes doing the trail as well, so its probably more a case of you getting to near to the front :D

We started near the back but finished much closer to the front, the banter at the back was fun but the congestion and lack of trail etiquette not! Would have happily traded some of the banter on day 1 for a little open single track!

Yeh - I have to admit that there is far less getting off for no obvious reason and the walking guys do move when you are trying to get up some sketchy climb...
