Also try Landjagers. They are cheap at some German butcheries and to me are even more fatty. When fresh they are also soft and easy to eat. I also convert old fizzy tablet tubes into canisters for dried berries and crushed almonds. I also use some old fashioned kaaiings on the road.

I heard that the body can get secondary energy stored in raw meat which might be negative for ketosis. Does anyone have more info on this?

I think the answer is to train low carb and low carb for endurance events. Race on sugar

I have come full circle with the LCHF resoning. Logically you require carbs for any high intensity work done i.e. heart rate above say 80 percent of maximum heart rate.

Currenly I do LCHF with carbs below 50 g on days I dont train. On training days I do LCHF before training, but then switch to low fat plus carbs after training. During the week this is fine because I train at night, so it only involves one meal done in this manner. For that meal i keep carbs at 100g. On weekends, if training in the morning, i will keep fat low and consume carbs for 6 hours after I finish my training, then switch to LCHF for the rest of the day. I restrict my carbs to wild rice and 32GI.

If I do a long ride, more than 2 hrs, I consume carbs in the form of 32GI.

The excess protein that you eat will be converted to glucose via a process known as gluconeogenisis, it's for this reason that the protein limit on LCHF is a serving of about a fist size. Low carb, moderate Protein and High Fat.

Is there really any point in eating fat/protein while out riding? I thought we have enough fat to keep us going for a long time.

I only eat on the bike if I feel hungry.... Which happens on the longer rides.

Has anyone experienced an odd bitter/bad taste sensation after a prolonged LCHF diet?

For the last three days, no matter what I eat or drink, it tastes crap.

How does a deviation from a low carb diet influence the whole process. .......

..... But once a week? Does that just nullify a whole week of correct eating?

It depends if your aim is to be in ketosis, or just simply lchf. If you're trying to achieve ketosis for prolonged periods, then a day off will set you back 36-72 hrs.

If simply following a "noakes style" lchf plan, then a day off won't make any difference with the exception of the sugar cravings Dave mentioned

I use nuts for anything more than 5 hrs, just because water get boring and sometimes I feel a bit peckish. But, no, I don't believe it's necessary for fuelling.

For those looking for a simple Keto explanation. Read it yesterday and think it is a good summary of the current state of thinking in the lchf community. Also give practical advice on achieving ketosis.

Available at amazon, ibooks, etc

Will this be available on Kindle? Or can one buy off Amazon for kindle?

I agree. I was going to ask the same question. Doesn't really make sense to me.

If one eats biltong or wors, it literally takes hours for it to digest. So you'll only start seeing the absorption of the amino acids from the protein digestion hours after getting off the bike. Like you say, we have massive reserves locked up in our existing fat reserves already, what point is there to eat animal fat and protein during a ride, except as just an excuse to eat something, or to feel full.

If you have not had any simple carbs before the ride and you're fat adapted, your body should have all the energy reserves available on board for hours and hours of riding. The only nutrition I see of value on the bike is very easily digested simple carbs for high intensity stuff where you need your 'engine' to burn hot and where there's a risk that you'll burn through your glycogen reserves too quickly and bonk.

The only fat that makes sense for me in sports nutrition is MCT oil (e.g. from coconut oil), because it's not stored by the body but used immediately for fuel.

For me, I have finally found the race fuel I've settled with: Cadence Marathon, from Dr. Jeroen Swarts company.

A lot of the research I've been reading recently is the need for a carb drink for endurance sports that includes a highly absorbing protein at a ratio of 5:1 carbs to protein.

I found this in the Cadence Marathon drink. Hammer Nutrition also have it (not sure which others).

Also their carb component is a mix of maltodextrin and fructose, which makes sense to me.

Check out the amino acid profile that it has as well. A lot of thought has gone into that (e.g. 1000mg taurine).

Lastly, and this I haven't seen other sports drinks, it has MCT oil in it. Clever. Probably why it makes me feel full and no mad cravings on the bike when I use it.

That's the first and last product I'll ever mention on this thread (disclaimer: I have no link whatsoever with the company :)).
