wow man that really sucks. Your closing words are spot on - I have been feeling a bit sorry for myself as training has just not materialised with a mix of travel, sickness and work pressure - but your situation is a reminder that it could be worse, and that the dayt is something to savour (even if I end up doing 17hours of savouring as may well be the case!)

Hope the op goes / went well

op went well thanks, 3 more weeks in the cast.. then the wires come out and another 4 weeks in a cast..

will try get the doc to change the cast for the 2nd 4 weeks, to a removable type.

i can't do any exercise at the moment, cast cant get wet, so can't sweat.. super frustrated, from massive hours of training to NOTHING at all..

will enter for trirock and make that my next goal... but for now, nothing at all..

My wife is happy as she says i will fatten up a bit.. :-)

enjoy the last weekend and taper before the race..

hope you have super weather on race day..

To the old hands - I am still confused about special needs. Guys I have spoken to who have done this before said family/friends can hand you your special needs etc - including clothing. The athlete info guide is explicit that this is not allowed, and further that special needs bags are for nutrition only and anything not used in the race will be discarded...

Can you really not have access to the bag after the race? Considering I am likely to be out there quite late I really want to allow for a warm top in case the weather turns in the evening... and if not used would obviously like to be able to retrieve...

Another thing from the athlete guide - there is something about compulsaryu reflective strips on shoes (and other clothing I think). Does everyone do this?

Couple of years back they allowed supporters to 'assist' you with special needs. In 2012 my wife stood close to the special need station and put a top on the ground for me, she did however obtain permission from referees to do this and were not allowed to touch me or hand me anything. I'm not sure whether special permission was given due to the severity of the weather and the fact that I was going to finish in something like 16 hours.

Last year no special need assistance other than the official one was allowed. You are allowed to put anything into the bag but will not have access to it after the race, anything left in there is donated. That is the rule.

Most running shoes have some form of reflective strips already and they hand you glowsticks when it gets dark. Some athletes do add extra strips to their clothing but I have never done so and have not seen it enforced.

You can be DQ'ed for receiving outside assistance, so your family cannot give you clothes or nutrition, the race directors view this as cheating as you are to be self sufficient or reliant on the organisers for nutrition.

The special needs bags can include clothes (I think), but the bags get disposed of after the race. I think this is to prevent people stocking them with everything under the sun and making collection of goodies during the race a nightmare. I personally will put a couple of cheep bars, a bottle and a spare tube and bomb in the bag and leave it at that. Less than R100 to chuck isnt a big deal to me.

If you are finishing after dark you must be visible, hence the reflective tape, lots of gear has reflective stuff on it as do many shoes, you may be properly equipped already. Best not to finish after dark hey?

Good call on the spare tube and bomb - hadn't thought of that. based on that I think I will carry one and leave one in the special needs bag. Since it seems definately no access after, I will probaby also shove in an old sweatshirt or something for the run - just in case.

As for being best to finish before dark... I am a value for money kind of guy - so I have to finish after dark to get more ironman bang for my bucks. (thats my story for today - it could change)

As in once on the bike and once on the run - I assume?

You assume correctly. On the run I took it last year on the last lap (at around 34km) as I had a new top in it that I didn't want to lose.

what is everyone's thoughts on pre-race massages in the days/weeks leading up to race day ?

I believe the general opinion is that nothing closer than 2 days before race day (not sure if that's right or not)

I always have this in my plan, but never get round to it..

Well I guess that depends on the type of massage. Don't do deep tissue or a heavy massage. A rub down is fine... As long as it all ends happily :whistling:

Two days before is probably ok, if it is a really light massage, I am having may last one on Wednesday, will also be pretty light

I dunno hey, pro's get massages every day during tours, stage races ect? But agreed deep tissue is probably not best as it also stresses the muscles to stimulate repair.

Ive been going regularly so will go Friday afternoon and then again next week before I drive then use the foam roller and seek out Mrs Palmer (for massage)

Generally it should knot be a problem, BUT I think this belongs in the "don't experiment with new things on or close to race day" category.

If you are used to having regular massages then it should knot be a problem.

If knot or if its the first massage you have had for a long time rather knot.

Cool list. The inspirational notes from kids is quite cheesy at first site - but actually quite clever. I reckon in those hours a message from my kids would be quite motivating to look forward to...

Frozen sports drink wrapped in foil also seems to be a good call (the wrapped in foil bit that is)...
