Free State R75-00 for all cycling clubs in the province.

That gives a total of R150-00 per year.

Our club ordered Bibs and shirts on big scale we could buy this at R500 per set.

I would say pretty cheap that.

The bikes and the parts is what is costing money.

i always compare to golf...club membership used to be around the 10k mark..round of golf is usually more than a cycle race..

10k year gets you to more than just an average golf course. playing at you own club should cost you around R100 for 18 holes, no bike service afterwards and golf clubs is way less than the average bicycle

in my opinion cycling, especially mtb'ing is way more expensive than playing golf

Cost of sport = expensive

Cost of health = Priceless!

Lying on the sofa and doing sweet buggerall is MUCH more expensive, in so many ways. Don't define sport participation in terms of cost, rather view it in terms of benefit and sheer enjoyment!

Golf:

Above average clubs R6 000

Driver R2500,

3W R1500,

Putter R1500

Bag, R1500

This will be a 3-5 year investment for average golfer. About the same as you average biker initial cost, maybe the biker will dish out about R2000 extra for helmet etc. For golf, add R100 per game and R5000 per year for membership as well as golf balls at about R25 x 3balls per round. Let's not forget the 19th hole.....

i would like to know where you gonna pay 100 bucks green fees for a round over the weekend...more like at least 200. plus 150 cart hire..if you dont walk.

sure buying the MTB is gonna be more...but it is a lot more fun. Golf is a stupid f------ing game. and thats from a golfer.. :whistling:

Ha ha, yep, you looking more at R200 a pop excl caddie and cart, but compared to max R50 for a ride, you can't compare.

Golf is a stupid game, but still, I find myself chasing that ball down the fairway (uhm.... rough) every chance I get.

Check this awesome video of Robin Williams, all golfers will relate.

I too think on the whole that cycling is far more expensive than golf. No matter how kitted out you are, you can walk into a shop and drop 5k on "better" kit without even trying. Let's not even get started on the cost of bikes.

Back to the topic though, although general cycling annual fees don't seem excessive, I still feel that R200 or so per race is a bit of a rip off.

Compare cycling to any sport, if you take them on as regular lifetime activities they are super pricey.

I always cycled for fitness from MX, at one point the cost of running a decent race bike and training and gear + the doctors bills, the game became ridiculous. So I went across to Free ride jet ski's. A few motors later and a couple broken hulls. The game is the same.( event costs are about the same for all sports), big cycle races, horse shows, MX rides all cost about the same.

My wife came from horse riding, my sis is a full time dancer ( cost of those doc bills are huge + travel time). These are lifestyle activites and yeah. Be prepared to cough, to enjoy at higher levels.

We need to have a round and then a ride or vice versa

What i would like to see is an average comparison of costs to be affiliated as a factor of cost spent on the sport

Example if you are a runner, you may spend R300 on membership, and approximately R5500 (shoes, kit and race entries) for a year. This represents 5% of your cost

If you are a cyclist. you may spend 75- 300 for affiliation, and anything from 2000 to 50 000 per year. This year I have spent about 10500 related to my sport. So this represents 2% (at R300)

Obviously this excludes travel
