It looks like JHB2C next year is also going to be a self-navigated event - so I'll need to upgrade my trusty Edge500 to something capable of accepting maps.

is the Edge800 the logical choice, or does anyone have a better suggestion?

That's what I suspected. How's the battery life though - heard its not that good?

You do have charging stations at every race village, I needed to charge my edge 500 every 3/4 day....

You would think so, and yes there are alot of "things" charging but I just marked my devices and at some of the villages you sign your things in and sign them out....No hassles.

You put your name on it, a little white sticker above the screen would do the job nicely.

In the same vein, could a Garmin 910XT be used?

I wouldn't really want to go and buy a GPS purely for cycling.

did that this year at j2c....just mark it. Also not everyone will be charging on every day.

Yea good point but I think it will give you the same as the edge 500...breadcrumbs, not turn by turn which is ideally what you want I suspect

Charging in the free state was controlled but once we entered KZN it was a shambles.

That is also true, freestate was great...friendly boere tannies that receive and return your beloved device...Reckon they become bulldogs if you try and take a chance.

Self-Navigation

The Garmin Edge 800 or Edge 810 would be a great option for the Joberg 2 C.

- With regards to Battery Life - Edge 800 15hrs & Edge 810 - 17hrs - So +/- 3 - 4 days.

- If you are worried about the battery running flat, try the External Battery Pack.

- Get a Garmin Silicone case to make your GPS slightly different from the rest.

Just let us know if you need any assistance with the Garmin Edge 800 or Edge 810.

this is what J2C looked like this year

hahahahha if yours is marked its ok, I never forgot where mine was, the biggest problem was security, things were stolen at hazeldean, sure wappo, glen and garry will sort that out next year.
