I've been thinking a bit more , weekends I have a lot of time for that. It depends on the type of riding, if you're going to ride max 15km/h next to the beach, don't take a helmet. If you're going to ride 30+ km/h somewhere, take it. Yes, and in anticipation of the most serious head injuries occurs at very slow speeds. What happened to putting your arms out before hitting the ground. I've never faleen and not sticking out my arms , and when I went over the handlebar 45km/h, I rolled. I mean, people fal when walking, should they then wear helmets. there are people who runs faster than most cyclists at the 94.7 and they don't wear helmets. My R50

It should be for the person to choose themselves. Not everyone is equally skilled at handling a bike. We are each the only one's who will know our intentions on whether a ride will be relaxed, well within our limits effort or something pushing the boundaries and as such dress appropriately for it.

For those who are interested in real research and statistics, I recommend this resource: http://www.cyclehelmets.org/1157.html . I don't believe that they are one sided, as they include research from both sides. For all those who thought I was joking, Let the fact the I have read many of those papers know how serious I am about this topic.

I you are one of the people who posted a "A helmet saved my life!" post, please read this: http://www.cyclehelmets.org/1209.html

There are many times and places for helmets (e.g This shows in a round about way that they are important for if you are cycling for sport: http://www.cyclehelmets.org/1261.html), but my daily commute is not one of them.

@ ORIGINAL POST garyvdm. I take it it first name GARY..??

Surname VAN DER MERWE,,,,,,,,ahhhh we all missed it, it's a VAN DER MERWE JOKE ....... :)

Indeed "Gary van der Merwe" is my real name. If you click on my profile, you will see that.

How nice of you to make fun of my name.

What's your real name? Oh wait, you are to scared to post it, and instead you hide behind a pseudonym.

And since you feel it's OK to shout at me about etiquette, I think it's OK to give you some etiquette: Attacking someones ideas by using a personal attack - not cool.

The impact protection of helmets is debatable but the friction/abrasion protection is not. Many times my helmet has taken a good thumping from branches, fences and low bridges - without helmet I would have bled every time. No contest there.

I do agree with this.

Yhea, I was going to ignore it, until you started lecturing me about etiquette. Then I lost it.
