Who needs a Dropper Post?

Are there any XC bike riders using dropper posts?

Although I wouldn't classify myself as a you know what, I did miss my dropper too much while I was the proud owner of a Momsen SL650B hardtail. So much so that I got one for the Momsen. It is a game changer.

When I parked my Mojo HD for a month or two to ride a demo 100mm 29er dual the thing I missed most was my dropper.

Are there any XC bike riders using dropper posts?

It seems to be mainly the domain of longer travel trail bikes and beyond, and on higher end LT trail and AM bikes it's pretty much standard issue. I think that having one on my DS XC bike would also make a huge difference. I like to take on some of the more technical trails.

Surely the biggest effect you can have on the overall geometry of the body/bike unit must be where you put your body. The saddle is often where I want my body to go.

Not to mention taking it in the nuts a few times when things went a bit wrong.

Even in cases where you don't absolutely need it, just lowering the saddle a little you can take moderately technical sessions faster and more confidently. And being more freed up and unconstrained has to be a lot more fun.

All this is theory to me as I've never ridden with a dropper post. I suppose I can test it out by just lowering the saddle on the trail, but it's a bit of a bother to keep stopping and adjusting.

The weight difference of +- 350g doesn't seem that bad to me. I'm not trying to win, just want to have the most fun possible on the bike.

So in short I think I need one.

Would be keen to know from other riders on XC bikes, is it a game changer, or just a gadget that adds weight, cost and maintenance overhead?

I heard Brian Lopes won one of the first XCE races last year with one.

Oh yes, will be running one on my XC machine (though I wouldn't call myself an XC racer at all)

I was really thankful for my dropper post at BC Bike Race this year. Being a mid-fielder it gave me so much confidence to clear the bigger obstacles and not pick up my teeth afterwards. With the rider etiquette I ended up making up at least 4 or 5 places every time it got rough, but the main advantage was how much fun I had doing things I never contemplated before. In the 4 months prior to BCBR I probably used the dropper post maybe 10 times, and 8 of these was to familiarize myself with it. I stayed off Contermanskloof black route, Jonkershoek DH, Tokai DH and the like, but after what I have cleared at BCBR I'm slapping on my knee guards and elbow guards this weekend and getting some airtime. We don't have nearly enough technical riding, and you don't need a full DH rig to ride most of the stuff on offer in the Western Cape. My next post might come from a hospital bed somewhere ( I heard that the new Netcare on the West Coast Road is quite nice), but I would have a story to tell...

After my recent Lev acquisition, I now own SIX dropper posts. :D

I will take that as a confession of guilt. Anything besides the death penalty would be a mockery of the justice system. Good day sir.

You have to justify it somehow ;)
